Apple Inc. captured 79.2 percent of global smartphone profits last year, according to the latest research by Strategy Analytics on Wednesday, highlighting the US technology giant's ability to maximize pricing and minimize production costs.

The global smartphone industry was estimated to have posted total operating profits of $53.7 billion last year, with Apple's operating profit standing at $44.9 billion, the research showed. Apple's operating profit margin stood at 32.4 percent last year.

In comparison, Samsung Electronics Co.'s smartphone business posted an operating profit of $8.3 billion last year, accounting for 14.6 percent of the global profits.

Apple - $44.9 billion, for 79% of profits

Samsung - $8.3 billion, for 14.6% of profits

Huawei - $929 million, for 1.6% of profits

OPPO - 1.5% of profits

Vivo - 1.3% of profits

Total for the top 5 smartphone makers: 98.2%

And yet you Android fanboys keep shitting on the iPhone for no apparent reason. If Apple is able to capture almost 80% of the smartphone market profits 10 years after they first introduced the iPhone, they must be doing something right, not withstanding the iPhone-is-for teenage-girls-and-soccer-moms jokes I keep reading here.

That's actually a huge decrease. They've previously and recently captured as much as 90% - 104%. Sell $AAPL.

This is probably not the best indicator of the future of the smartphone market. Apple rips off Americans with overpriced handsets. I thought this was pretty much common knowledge?

All that tells me is that you overpaid and continue to overpay for your cell phone.

80% of profits is bc it is grossly overpriced. Congrats to Apple. I don't own Apple products bc they are overpriced. I own Apple stock bc fan boys will buy apple products regardless of quality.

iOS is rarer than Android OS. There's nothing inherently more secure about it; if you're going to create a virus, you'll target the most common OS.

Exactly. As their phone market share continues to decrease. Why bother with such a niche product.

So this is about profit, not Market Share?

Wouldn't the cost to value of your phone likely be better, if they weren't posting huge profits? Congrats on all of the money they made off of you.

It also only supports their hardware and can control the entire environment.

Lots of different versions of Android in the wild.

Apple has a lot of buyer power so it isn't a surprise they keep costs low. Profits have two levers...Apple clearly demands a premium price so cost containment just expands the margins.

Apple makes a great product that, once you jail break it, performs nicely.

Price containment = worse hardware = innovation
