I currently have all Dell SonicWALL certs along with the basic Fortinet certs (forget what it's called), but we are slowly picking up customers with Cisco devices. I can make my way around a Cisco ASA via ASDM-IDM, but I want to be more knowledgeable so I can fully use the CLI.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on where to start for the Cisco certifications?

you can self study icnd1 and 2 fairly easily, based on a general assumption of your networking skills from the OP. look for the official cert guide by Odom, and grab a copy of packet tracer from Cisco's website.

I have one from years ago (2008). Back then the material was very valuable, but even our boot camp instructor encouraged straight up memorization for the exam. I believe they've changed the exam format in recent years to be tougher.

As more and more people get certified, the test devs make the test more difficult to curb it. This is true for all the entry level exams in the major fields. Hell the new Network+ test is MUCH more difficult than in the past. Im willing to bet its harder today than the CCNA was circa 2008.

I do, got it in 2012 and just renewed it by getting my CCNP TSHOOT test knocked out.

Start with ICND1, then ICND2. That's what I did, and I'd recommend it 10/10 times over going for straight CCNA without any real-world experience in networking.

It could easily costs 12k....The issue we've seen is that after an employee gets certified, their value to another company is exponentially greater...

Maybe for the CCIE, but I don't think that's what he's talking about here. I think he's talking about entry level certs.

As someone stated earlier, ICND1 and ICND2 are a good place to start. Depending on what you spend most of your time working on, they have different paths you may want look at (security, wireless, etc...).

ETA: I took the combined CCNA test back in 2008, but I had a fair amount of real work experience already. I've since gotten the CCNA wireless and my CCNP and I'm one test away from my CCNP wireless.

just got my CSSA last week actually. i really prefer to sell Palo Alto to SonicWall, but it was required as a partner.

good advice in this thread, the ICND's should prepare you for the CCNA, but like others, i haven't taken it since 2008.

if you're looking for a course, globalknowledge has good instructors and i've enjoyed both their online as well as in class courses. looks like you can get both classes for around $7k.

What? No. Not if he's just self-studying. Two $80 books, two $200 tests. Lots of people afford a CCNA on their own dime.

I demo'd one for about 3 months. I really wasn't overly impressed. I definitely thought the DPI on a SonicWALL was much more intensified than on the Palo Alto

What books are you speaking of? I'd gladly spend $160 on my dime

who the frick was your reseller then? i make people jizz in their pants when i demo it (aggyprotected)

i've only ever had one person not buy it after a PoC and that's because the dude making the decision (went with sourcefire) went to work for cisco immediately after.

Not sure of the reseller. Boss man handles all that. I demo'd a Palo Alto, Fortinet, and SOPHOS. I was really impressed with the Fortinet only because I had dealt with it before.

Not knocking the Palo Alto, but I just rather the SonicWALL.
