Going on a cruise as well as Hawaii next year and was interested in getting one. Anyone know anything about them?

I don't have a GoPro, bought an SJCAM a couple years back before my trip to Ecuador and I couldn't be more pleased with the video. It also comes with a boat load of accessories that you would normally have to pay for with a GoPro. I know that isn't what you're asking, but if you're looking to save some $$ and still get a really good camera then you should look into the SJCAM.

Can't upvote this enough.
I bought an AKASO 4K camera a couple weeks ago and have been very pleased with it so far. Father-in-law has a Go Pro for scuba diving and when comparing the two side by side, you can't tell a difference.

You might try asking on the Outdoor Board. You got a couple of good responses already but a lot of fishermen use GoPros or similar cameras now.

I was given one as a gift. Used it in colorado when i went skiing. Played around with the editing software and made some family movies when i got home.
I enjoyed it. I really can't comment on its quality versus cheaper competitors though. Like i said it was a gift. If i had to buy it outright i'd definitely shop around and look at alternatives. Might be paying extra just for the name.

I just looked up the Akaso 4K on Amazon. $83 with a bunch of accessories. I might bite on that soon.

how good are these type of cameras for use as a dashcam? I've been looking at dashcams but they all seem so sketchy. Seems like an action camera would be a good solution. I don't care about it not being inconspicuous.

I have one (silver +) and use it for hiking, vacation, dash cam, etc. I think it is a great little camera but it is just too expensive for my uses. Its underwater capabilities are pretty impressive but I just don't have the need for it consistently.
I feel that a LifeProof case on your $800 smartphone will take better pictures and good enough video to save you the money. If you have to question if you should get it, you probably don't need it.

Depends on what you want to use the dash cam for. I've looked at some dashcams, but haven't looked at GoPros before. If it comes down to needing footage from a dashcam for legal purposes, I would think that the GPS and g-force sensors would help. If my video has my speed and location embedded in the video, it could prove the difference in an at-fault judgement.

I have a GoPro Hero 3 and $40 Lightdow LD4000. I can't tell the difference in the picture. I beat the hell out of this thing too, racing dirt bikes and scuba diving.
ETA... it's on sale for $35 on Amazon. LINK....

I'd go with a good camera as this is something you will keep for a long time and you want your memories to be of decent quality. I quite like my GoPro Hero 4 Silver. If you go scuba diving etc a lot you will need a good camera to get anything worthwhile. Plus, I might add, you will need a magenta and a red filter kit for green/blue water.
They are not expensive at all and you will notice a HUGE difference.

After a lot of research on GoPro alternatives I went with a Gitup Git2. From a technical perspective it uses a high quality Sony sensor. Sony makes some of the best of not the best sensors in the photography world. Ha image stabilization which makes a pretty big difference in the shakiness of any videos.
