Yes.

Well here's our website, where you can navigate to the page to download the update yourself, run the .exe, and manually install it.

Thanks!

Bonus points to the ones that make you manually uninstall the previous version first.

Nah, it's just freeware, like GPU-Z, Afterburner, CCleaner, etc. that don't have an auto-update feature.

I scrutinize ALL offers to update....especially flash

a few years back, one of my customers told me about some crud his computer picked up on, simply from auto-update . [ never found out what exactly it was ] and he swore it was so....had to have it removed by a tech.

but I uncheck all auto updates on mine to date....

One day I got a little popup in the lower right corner asking "Do you want to install the downloaded software?" and I could choose "Install" or "Later". No indication of what software was involved.

After some Googling it turned out this was an update to a Verizon app for Samsung phones.

Yes. this one is annoying as hell. Doesn't even attempt to identify itself.

Pretty much every update to Flash and Java are to patch vulnerabilities. If you don't update these programs, your computer will be extremely vulnerable to attacks.

Just to emphasize: ALWAYS INSTALL UPDATES TO ADOBE READER, ADOBE FLASH PLAYER, AND JAVA. ALWAYS.

Malware creators know that the most commonly installed software out there is Reader/Flash/Java, so they often disguise malware as Reader/Flash/Java updates. If you or anyone else got malware from a Reader/Flash/Java update, it's because you were too stupid to realize that it wasn't really a Reader/Flash/Java update.
