What exactly does this do that a Smart TV doesn't?

I had a basic Cox package at my office that turned into a worthless pile of crap with the digital switchover. I lost FNC, CNN and ESPN so I am dumping the TV package.

Will a Fire stick or some other device give me some alternatives that a smart TV wouldn't? To be clear, I have no idea with the Amazon device does.

Really just looking for something to play in the background while I work. Not so much movies.

TIA.

All you had to do was go pick up the box from Cox.

Not necessarily. If he had the Flex programming he only got the local programming and a few other channels which wouldn't include the ones he mentioned. However, if he bypassed the box and plugged the coax directly to his tv he got those channels in SD but no longer will. Technically, he was stealing those channels which is Cox's main reason for the switch.

Cox says I was getting those channels "on accident". I told them that I am paying $139 a month for crap 5kb internet and a single phone line. If they can't get me FNC and CNN then they can stuff the box.

Looking at alternative providers now and going to stream GoESPN or something over a Firestick.

Hate Cox.

You have to have a cable subscription to log in to to be able to use watchESPN, etc. Or a family / friend's log in .

Pick up a Roku and order Sling TV for 20 bucks a month. You can install the WatchESPN app on the roku and stream ESPN all day.
As for Internet news coverage I like to stream Sky News on my Roku. The Brit announcers make even the bad news seem classy.

Fire stick, add Kodi and you can get any show, any movie, and sports event.

Pretty simple.

Link me to a site to get step by step instructions. I'm sure there are dozens of websites, just looking for a recommendation.
