Ok, I'm wondering if this is even possible yet as I don't currently own an Echo. Wondering if anyone has done this?

What I want to do is setup an Amazon Echo in the kitchen and then have a few echo dots throughout the house. Is it possible to have Amazon Echo connected to my TV, receiver, Amazon Fire TV and even Sonos so that I can be anywhere in the house and say "Alexa, turn off the TV" and it do that + turn off receiver? Or even "Alexa, play Sonos" or something to that extent?

I know Echo works with Wink for lights and even ecobee and Nest for thermostats but what about other "dumb" devices?

Yes. I have that same exact setup minus the sonos. You'll need a Harmony Home Hub to control the tv/receiver/DVR. It works flawlessly with the Echo.

The harmony hub is on the 2nd shelf. The IR sensor from the harmony is on the top shelf, where my receiver and DVR are sitting.

Harmony Home Hub

Does this work or is it compatible with the Harmony One remote that I already have? So I guess just buy the Hub at (LINK ).

Dumb question but what does the hub plug into? Or does it just sit wherever and get programmed through the app? Wasn't sure if it needed to be plugged directly into an input in my AV receiver or something.

I don't think the harmony one remote works with it. My hub came with a remote though.

The hub doesn't plug into the receiver. The hub outputs IR and it also has an IR sensor that you can plug into it and route somewhere else, which is what I did so I didnt have to put the hub on the same shelf as the receiver/DVR. The only other thing that plugs into the hub is the power.

That blows for me. What remote/package deal did you get? I see that the newest remote comes with the hub but that shite's like 300$.

ETA: Oh lord, logitech! Apparently I have the Ultimate One, which is compatible with the Hub. Compared to just the Harmony One (obsolete now), which is NOT compatible.
Confusing marketing crap right there.

This is the exact package I have

Oh yeah the ultimate is compatible. It's what I use in my living room to control everything. I keep the remote that came with the hub on my patio to control everything from out there.

I dont think it works with Sonos yet (at least not without a few workarounds). When it does, I will be buying...

The harmony works with sonos

If you have a home automation hub then it will work with the echo as well for basic commands.

TigerRob20, I'm almost at a crossroad now. My family already has 3 sonos speakers (an older Play:5 + 2 single play:1's). I'm debating just buying Amazon Echo's for the house instead of further Sonos speakers just since the Echo is already connected/smart.

Sonos needs to get their products "smart".

Oh well then hell, I'm about to put a lot of money on my credit card soon. So I'll need:
1) Harmony Hub = 90$
2) Amazon Echo = 180$
3) An Amazon dot or 2

Which actually begs another question. How well does the Echo hear from at certain distances? I have 1 long shotgun house so thinking about putting the main Echo in the kitchen area but wondering how many Amazon Dot's I'll need at certain distances away from the echo?

Not sure of exact distances but I have an open kitchen/living room/dining room. I put it in the kitchen and it has no problem hearing me from 30ft away. It's actually really surprising how well the far field voice recognition works. Amazon has mastered that.

It sounds like from the post above that Sonos can be connected to the Amazon Echo system through a hub. I am kind of at a crossroads now too. I want to purchase a hub to work with my new C by GE bulbs that have been discussed on the Tech Board before. But it would be nice if the hub could integrate with my Harmony remote (a 900, which it sounds like may be too old), my Sonos system, and a future garage door opening system as well as home security system.

In short, I really want one system to do all of this shite without having to open multiple different apps. I may wait and see how the new Home app to be released in iOS 10 is going to accomplish the marriage of all the Apple Home Kit devices.

I guess at this point in time, I'll have to pull out my phone to order more paper towels from Amazon.

I was so happy to find that deal too.

based on the size and number of sheets, these are cheaper than Walmart. And even if they were a few dollars more, it is worth it not to set foot in that hell hold.

It's the little things, right?

Sorry for the hijack, back to the topic at hand.

I probably just need to buy an Amazon Echo and mess around with it. I'm sure I wouldn't regret it, right?

I'm in the same boat. I can see it being useful for both my wife and myself. Setting timers, alarms, asking it questions that randomly come up in the kitchen (like how many tablespoons in a cup) and other random crap. Then sprinkle in home automation through voice (with the Harmony Hub) and being able to control lights and tv and such through voice. Plus being able to use it as a "Sonos light" type speaker.

That's a lot for 180$.

And also if you have Apple devices, with the changes coming to iOS 10, you may be able to do a lot via Siri and the better integration with HomeKit and the new Home app.

So I may just hold off and see how that works before jumping in and ordering another device.

Gotta ask, what do you mean? My wife and I both have iPhones + AppleTV (4th gen with the little siri remote). But we already have Wink Hub + lights. We use the wink app to control those with shortcuts and such.

What will the HomeKit do that's different?

Home App (Verge)

Nothing really groundbreaking, but the HomeKit stuff will now have a user facing application that will allow control of a ton of different things from a central location. (Probably similar to Wink, though I havent used that app much, but more integrated into iOS).
