So if it's 16 groups of three, do the top two teams or just the top team in each group advance?

So fifa is still about the $$$ even though they will tell you it's about growing the game.

Forget about the watered down WC for a second - this right here is the worst. Qualifying is now nothing. So we will now only have meaningful games every 4 years. Awesome. Idiots.

I can't find a GIF to adequately express all of the conflicting negative emotions I have.

But this - this right here - this is the @#$# that ruins the good in our world.

Spanish league want to take FIFA to court to stop World Cup expanding to 48 teams. La Liga say they weren't consulted on unacceptable plan

What a terrible idea. Potential for teams to conspire to both advance by fixing the last game.

Here are the competitive effects it will have:

- The last game of group stage will be played with both teams knowing the third team's point total.

- Assuming they use pots to select groups, it guarantees a team ranked below 32 in each group. Thus, there will be no "Group of Death" situations and the top seeds will be through 90% of the time.

- Success late in the tournament will depend heavily on the knockout stage matchups and how long you can go before playing Germany/Spain/Argentina/etc. This would keep the battle between 1st and 2nd in the group stages more interesting.

- As mentioned above, teams can only be added from the bottom. This means teams like Trinidad and Tobago, Bolivia, and Jordan will make every tournament now.

- If they give UEFA around 18 positions, that would mean almost all groups would have a single UEFA team.

- The increase in games (63 to 79) would require either more stadiums or heavier use of the existing fields.

- Each team reaching the later rounds would play the same number of games in either format (a round of 32 game replacing the 3rd group game). The 3rd place teams would only play two games.

Positives:

- The US is one of the few countries that can support hosting a tournament of this size

- The hilarity of the commentary as people who can't name 48 countries try to talk intelligently about players from each team

- It might end internationals

Funniest thing is the World Cup is already a years long tournament that every time is in to start. Expanding the final is just stupid unless you've really been wanting to see that potential Germany-UAE matchup in the group stages

SCH being the eurosnob. 2014 had 3/4 advance. Probably had 2/4 in qtrs if Mexico didn't get fukked. Let me know how fukking Engerrand did in 2014. Putz.

You're an idiot

CONCACAF had three of four teams make the knockouts of the last World Cup, which was better than any other confederation. Costa Rica won their group against Italy, England, and Uruguay and was a penalty shootout away from making the semis. Both Mexico and the US made the knockouts at the expense of good European teams (Croatia and Portugal, respectively).

Africa and Asia sucked it up. If anyone should lose spots it's them.

Looks like it's time for another John Oliver FIFA rant.
