I find it hilarious you mock goals from set pieces when 90% of all football scores are on called plays

You think defenders don't need to keep possession? If a defender loses the ball, really bad shite happens.

1) In the rulebooks, benefit of the doubt on offsides should go to the attacking player. In practice this seems to happen about 1/10 times.

History of the offside rule:

1) Initially, you had to have 3 opposing players (generally keeper and two defenders) in front of you.

2) Amended so that you only had to have 2 opposing players (generally keeper and last defender) in front of you.

3) 1990, Amended so that if you were LEVEL with the last defender, you would be onside. Previously, if you were level, you were offside.

I'd like to make the change where if ANY part of your body (say your foot) is level with the defender, you should be considered onside. I hate it when goals are called back when the player looks like he's only marginally offside. This minor rule change will still prevent cherry picking while giving the attackers the benefit of the doubt on an offside call.

They are already suppose to give benefit of doubt to the attacking player and don't.

Remember one year in the late 80s of Serie A there was an 11 goal differential separating the last and first place of the league. That was some great football those days despite the incredible defense being played.

Why are American's so obsessed with the idea that athleticism is necessary for success in this sport? Technicality trumps athleticism 12 out of 10 times in soccer.

They can't break out of the recruiting "beasts" and "freaks" thought mode which permeates American football and to some extent basketball.

Moreover, they don't follow soccer enough to see the great, "freak," "beast" athletes EVERY big club ALREADY has come through their youth and reserves but don't make it due to never developing elite technical skills even though they've been playing and being coached since they were kids.

I just wish some of these guys owned clubs so Roma could keep the Mattia Destros and sell them all the Stefano Okakas.

I specifically said DEFENSE, but we're getting away from the original question.

the original question was dumb. to those that enjoy the sport, one of the more entertaining matches from this WC was a 0-0 draw.

its not up to the sport to cater to one specific country that has a bunch of ignorant old farts who dont really have any interest in soccer anyway, but still find a need to criticize it to death.

as far as your second point, the country is full of out-of-work basketball and football players. if it was as easy as you say, im sure someone would have figured it out a long time ago.

Can you appreciate that a lot of Americans (i.e. most) are turned off by soccer because of a lack of scoring?

Why isn't rugby more popular in America?

Fast I'll agree with, but as good? We'd have a team stacked full of Robbie Findley's. Soccer isn't all about athleticism, it takes lots of skill and awareness that have to be practiced and refined for years.

Put it in a language this ´engendro´ will understand.

That would be like a baseball team that can´t throw, can´t hit, and can decently catch. They´re all fast as hell, however.

What are you going to do? Teach them to bunt?

Even then, they aren´t going to score much, and they damned sure are going to let in a lot of runs.

t is my true belief that you could take America's best athletes who have never previously played soccer, practice them up for a bit, send them out on the soccer field, and they'd be lights out on defense. They may not score, and probably wouldn't, but they'd be just about as good as anybody else on defense.

Nope. Even the highest paid defenders, brazils cb pairing. Are skilled passers of the ball. I follow Arsenal, and for all of mertesackers defecencies, he's a great distributor. You still have to get the ball out of ur own half.

I didn't think it was possible, but Rex has proven he is able to be the worst poster on every TD board he posts on. His consistency really is amazing.

I think what the OP is not grasping is that defending in soccer does not have a set ending. In football, if you tackle and stop the ball carrier three times in a row, your defense trots off the field.

Now, let's ignore for a moment the athletic skills necessary in defending in soccer, which admittedly share some similarities with other sports. If all you could possibly do was stop the attacking player, but were unable to do anything meaningful with the ball, you would never stop defending the whole game. And there is no way that any defense could withstand that much in attack. Right, OP?

I'm not into criticizing a sport for the sake of making fun of its fans. I actually want to like the sport because it is oh so close to being there for me. It's frustrating.

If you're serious and actually start watching more matches you'll almost certainly change your mind just like almost every other person who does so. You'll no longer be as solely focused on scoring but on all the aspects of the game.

You'll also see that the WC is the greatest sporting event in the world due to the fanfare, passion and what it means to players and entire countries to do well but that it's really not quite the quality game that you'll see being played by the top clubs that play together all the time.

Because it's almost never shown on tv. Though I do think DirectTV shows Super Rugby matches but they all come on at like 2am in the morning.

Most Americans have probably never even seen a Rugby match. I have to download all my matches. I'd be thrilled if Rugby got even 1/10th the coverage that Soccer gets.

I didn't really understand soccer until this World Cup and specifically Colombia and Germany

I used to be hung up on goals too but have come to appreciate the skill to play correctly. I really enjoy the intensity and anxiety of the lack of scoring but the abundance of chances

I have seen the error of my ways and have repented

Yeah, I think that's what people don't understand. Goals are awesome but the buildup and narrowly missing a goal is pretty gut wrenching too
