1. Mexico – 13 pts; +7 GD
2. Costa Rica – 8 pts; +4 GD
3. USA – 7 pts; +3 GD
4. Panama – 6 pts; 0 GD
5. Honduras – 4 pts; -8 GD
6. Trinidad & Tobago – 3 pts; -8 GD
MATCHDAY 6
USA @ Mexico (2 days earlier due to Mexico playing in Confederations Cup)
Honduras @ Panama
Trinidad & Tobago @ Costa Rica
Despite Pulisic and his huge balls predicting a win at the Azteca, we should be ecstatic if we go in and get a point there on 3 days rest. Regardless of the outcome though, we really need Honduras to get a point or 3 in Panama. Panama not winning that game would be huge for our top 3 chances moving forward.

Am I thinking wrong to want Panama to get 3 just to almost guarantee at least a spot in the playoff with Asia?

We already got our separation from Honduras with a +11 goal differential over them. Now we need to start setting our sites on pulling away from Panama.
I'll put it this way, a Panama win and we'd need a win to stay in third. A Honduras win/draw and we'll still be in third regardless of what we do at the Azteca.
If at all possible, I'd rather be in 3rd than 4th after this weekend, considering we'll have Costa Rica next up in September before our schedule gets easier with the final three matches.

Boy, that table looks a lot better than it did mid-March.
If you had told me after the shitshow against Costa Rica that we'd get 7 points from the next 3, I'd have taken it no questions asked. All of us would. That we did it with a +8 goal difference makes it that much better.

There is 0 chance that we don't end up in the top three.
Is there any advantage to winning concacaf qualifying? Used to be that we'd be the head of a group at the WC, but I believe that is no longer the case.

Of course it's fun to win the Hex, but making the top 3 is all that matters. No special reward for finishing first.
We should make the top 3 no problem, and even if we somehow flop and finish 4th, I'd like our chances against the 5th place AFC team. It's not a done deal yet by any means, but we should all feel pretty safe about qualifying at this point. Wins in our two remaining home games would pretty much seal the deal, and I think we could steal a win in Honduras or Trinidad, as well.
After Sunday, our remaining schedule is very favorable. Away matches against the two weakest teams in the Hex, home games against teams we generally play very well against on home soil. At worst, we should get 8 points from our last 4. Anything less would be disappointing.
Of course it's fun to win the Hex, but making the top 3 is all that matters. No special reward for finishing first.

Take a look at the AFC standings. There's a strong possibility that we will have a tough draw. We will have to play either Australia, Saudi Arabia, Japan, South Korea, or Uzbekistan.
