Marcelo Bielsa sounds like a possible candidate to lead the US National Team: he asked for US $ 4M a year and Landon Donovan as an assistant.

would this be as a more permanent fixture for after Bruce, or instead of Bruce?

Bielsa is the ultimate boom or bust guy. He could take us to the semis or have us finish last in qualifying. I don't really want to hop on that wild ride.

Bielsa has always been the one really big name linked to US jobs that appeared realistic.

Is this suggesting Bielsa after 2018? I would be intrigued by it. I wonder what his relationship is like with Donovan.

I'm worried that it would take him some time to understand the unique aspects of the US soccer system since he has been a Latin America/Europe lifer, but one thing is certain. If we are sick of Klinsmann's one sentence responses about "playing with passion" and "expressing ourselves out of our comfort zone", then Bielsa is certainly going to do the exact opposite of that in the middle of a 4 hour press conference when he makes references to Copa Libertadores games from the 90s as to why he benched Fabian Johnson

haha, from his wikipedia entry:

quote:

As Bielsa refuses to grant exclusive interviews, the press conference has become his preferred method of communication. He has been known to field every last question from the assembled media during these gatherings. If the talk turns to the intricacies of the game, a three- or even four-hour press conference is possible. According to him, "Every media should get the same attention from me, from the biggest TV station to the smallest newspaper."

He's an a-hole but he's a visionary and helped instill the perfect culture and tactics for Chile's golden generation. I think he would be great.
