...and I don't mean Gregg if we lose.

Biggest game for us in quite some time and we have a rogue marketing team creating needless distractions with a half-assed attempt at "showing solidarity."

Between this and Wynalda, it's like we're trying to frick ourselves.

quote:

U.S. Soccer officials chose to express their solidarity without consulting U.S. players or men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter, a U.S. Soccer spokesman said. They consulted Iranian American experts, but did not consult the U.S. government, two sources told Yahoo Sports. A U.S. Department of State spokesperson confirmed in a statement that there was “no coordination on this action."

quote:

The atmosphere at Sunday’s news conference, meanwhile, was tense. Zimmerman and fellow defender Tim Ream chose words carefully. They were asked a half-dozen soccer questions, but also a half-dozen questions about the federation’s social media posts and the situation in Iran. They reiterated multiple times that they “support women’s rights,” as Ream said, and they “empathize” with the Iranian people, but they’re focused on “preparing for what is a crucial game.”

At one point during the news conference, Iranian reporters in the front row with their hands raised accused USMNT press officer Michael Kammarman of silencing them, by not calling on them. When one finally got a question, the last of the news conference, he said: "I just want to point out, media officer of U.S. national soccer team should respect international media. This is World Cup, this is not MLS Cup."

The USSF is an incompetent organization that can’t help but score own goals. They are monumentally stupid for doing this shite.

It's almost like we're begging for an arse kicking from them. Why would they put this pressure on our boys when they're already under so much going into Tues?

Their players probably feel the same way about their government that ours do!

They posted in all of their graphics that showed "USA vs Iran" and it had both team's flags.

Ah, sounds like people posting misinformation then. I took the article on CNN as "US posted the Iranian Flag" as in, only the Iranian flag. Thanks for clarifying what I failed to research.

There was no misinformation and you're clearly still confused.

In that same post, the US flag emoji has like 20 stars on it. That's the bigger travesty in all this

I think I am. I read an article that said that US Soccer Twitter posted an image of the Iranian flag to stand up for atrocities occurring in Iran. Did this happen? If so, I stand by my earlier post, if not, I do not.

The Iranian state media Twitter account through which the complaint was initially shared literally has an American flag burning as its profile banner.

No, unless this is a separate event, they used an Iranian flag with the emblem of the Islamic Republic removed

Unnecessary distraction given the press conference described above, but not the most indefensible stance of all time

I mean, this is a weird way for someone to take a stance, but I don’t know if I’d file this under bullshite causes

It really is the biggest problem with autocratic regimes that oppress dissent - they are just so thin skinned. Well perhaps not the biggest problem.

Berhalter needs to use this to his advantage and try to make things uncomfortable for Queiroz and the Iranians. Just make up a story about how when they last spoke they joked Biden is a senile old count and Khamenei is a Muslim terrorist. Tell the media he knows the Iranian players don’t want to kill all the Jews, kurds, sunnis, homos and loose women anymore than his players want to give black people traffic tickets.

In fairness, there's only about 20 states that still stand for freedom.

So apparently the press conference was something today...

quote:

Nancy Armour
@nrarmour
Iranian journalist just asked Berhalter why he hasn't asked US gov't to remove a Naval ship from around Iran. That's where we are today.

quote:

Meg Swanick
@Meg_Swanick
Berhalter is asked if Jurgen Klinsmann is doing psychological warfare against Iran. Berhalter says ask Jurgen. This is quite a press conference.

quote:

Meg Swanick
@Meg_Swanick
Tyler Adams reprimanded by a reporter for his pronunciation of Iran. Then asked how he feels representing a country given its treatment of black people.... Adams stoic. Great response.

quote:

Meg Swanick
@Meg_Swanick
Asked if social media posts defaming Iran's flag would motivate them, Queiroz gives a long, impassioned answer. More applause breaks out. At one point he says they have solidarity with humanitarian causes all over, including racism, and "kids that die in schools with shootings"

@Meg_Swanick
We’re 20 minutes from USA v Iran match day -1 press conferences. It’s as crowded as you can imagine in here.

Carlos Queiroz and Iran up first.

Rampant applause from the Iranian press as they come in.
