Assumption upon assumption upon assumption from a single "source." I can't take this article seriously from a numbers standpoint.

The deputy commissioner himself is quoted in the very first line as saying the league is losing over $100,000,000 a year

Why do WE have to come up with a second source? Did you consider trying to find a second source?

We've got some heat in the comments section.

This article is mildly-educated speculation and nothing more. Not even sure what his motivation is other than simply wanting to see the MLS books. He chose to run with a single unnamed source (whose own motivations are up for debate) and is struggling to defend himself in the comments.

Sports business breaks traditional economic rules all the time and he's trying to mold it back into what he knows well.

I firmly believe the league operates at a loss. Soccer does worldwide. I question some of the math he used and the motivations of him and the source. I choose to not take the article seriously. Feel free to disagree.

Bud, MLS is lying about their losses, every US sports league misrepresents their profitability as a collective bargaining tactic.

Probably true, and the fact that MLS has abused their arbirtrary D1 sanction to limit competition and keep player salaries obscenely low is another issue i have with this "league", if you can call a single entity structure an actual league as opposed to an exhibition

The article conveniently leaves out the rest of the article it cites. Oops

quote:

The union, in its proposal, will cite indicators of the league’s health. It procured a $90 million television contract this year. After the 2013 season, Forbes reported that the average M.L.S. franchise was worth $103 million, a 175 percent increase since the magazine’s previous valuation of clubs in 2008.

Seems the league is growing.

quote:

“On a combined basis, M.L.S. and its clubs continue to lose in excess of $100 million per year,” Abbott said. “As a result, we are not in a position where we are discussing how to divide profits with the players, but rather what is an appropriate level of investment and where the investment should be made given the reality of our financial condition.”

Sounds like union/league posturing.

Owners aren't investing for now or next season or the season after. They're banking on it growing...which it is. He refers to MLS franchises as an investment, then ignores the long-term gains. That's the entire selling point of the league. Rapid growth with a sport that is constantly growing in the states. Ground floor access.

When he says, "well people say owners will want to make money and right now that isn't happening so PONZI SCHEME/LEAGUE WILL FOLD" is such bullshite. Owners know it won't be overnight. They'll hit some bumps in the road but there is some serious potential.

This post is funny considering the amount of times you've pitched a fit on here about be calling you Jonathan Klinsmann.

Yes, why can't they be honest and transparent like all other football leagues, and sports leagues for that matter.

So, to clarify, because other leagues have issues too I should, as an American, just accept the harm MLS is inflicting upon the sport in this country?

Not at all. I just notice that you never talk about any issues of any other league. You only talk negatively about MLS because you have a soap box pet issue hatred.

You make constant outlandish claims about MLS. I highly dispute the assertion you make in the post just above, that MLS is inflicting irreparable harm on the sport in the US. Soccer has never been better in the US in my lifetime, either on a professional, amateur, or youth level, and MLS is playing a direct role in it. The effect of MLS academies will be monumental.

This will be the last time I respond to you about this. Everyone here knows your purpose, I believe, and there really is no point in attempting to have a real discussion with someone who is, quite frankly, extremely close minded and strident in his hatred of something.

MLS is far from inflicting any harm ... in fact, it has been and continues to be great for the sport of soccer here in the U.S.
