How does a team like Chelsea succeed to the point of maybe/likely advance in the CL and yet flounder so badly in the league?

Some players just play better in Europe than they do domestically.

Importance of each match. Also, Chelsea had no depth last year. They just ran out of the same players every match and suffocated opponents in the Prem. It is very tough to win consistently twice a week without squad depth.

It doesn't hurt when you get the Group they did.

Had they been put in several other groups, They would be looking forward to a trip to the EUFA cup.

Sometimes it's "just the way it is" in this sport.

I get this part of it, but they are mired in "terribleness" in the league.

You do know there is a pretty decent chance we don't advance right?

This too. Chelsea was pretty fortunate last season with injuries.

Injuries can KILL a team. City still hasn't been able to field their best 11 this year. It is maddening.

Of course. But their CL form is still better than the league.

Is it though? We lost to Porto, drew at Kiev and took a last minute Willian free kick to beat Kiev at home.

We were just lucky to draw Tel Aviv and even we couldn't screw those 6 points up.

When Chelsea won the CL they finished sixth in the PL that season.

RM´s CL championship against Juve came when they were more or less miring in that range of the table, as well.....

Even that is somewhat surprising but they are nowhere close to 6th right now.

You may be right.

They are through to the next round with a draw though. And it is at home.

Well I hope we lose because getting into Europa is our shot at getting back next year.

It's a shot, but I don't see them winning anything in that tournament either.

It appears my question stands, and no one quite knows the answer.
