I always tell people new to the game this: Just start watching, and let a club "pick" you. Sometime that can take years, if it ever happens.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with initially picking a team to support. But sometimes you wind up liking another team more.

Okay, I'll bite, even though no conversation with you will turn into anything productive.
What's the difference between that and following players? You have no real association with Ronaldo.

hell when tottenham had bale and modric i was all about them...esp when they got ade..but then they sold modric and i was like "later"

i enjoyed watching leeds rape people on (and off) the pitch.
really though, they were a good young team who pissed off and finished 3rd in 2000 and i happened to start paying attention to the champions league. saw some wild matches.
had a great young nucleus of players (smith, bowyer, bridges, dacourt, bakke, woodgate, kewell, viduka, keane, etc.)
combination of the fun to watch, players i like, style of play. i enjoyed david o'leary's disposition as manager as well.

strategically, bayern should have been some little counts like barca and dove in the box early and often. real got a lot of (lucky? clutch?) toe pokes in the box, many could have led to a PK with the right dive
on the flip side, real fricked up a few counters. ronaldo and di maria missed a sitter each. what was up with isco COMPLETELY misjudging a few balls? how did sergio not clothesline a bayern guy or some random shite?

I 'picked' Chelsea in 1989 because their colors/mascot were similar/same as my high school. I was in the armed forces at the time and had a 72 hour pass while on the south coast. I went to visit a friend in London and she was clueless about sports (she is now a gunners fan). 
We beat Blackburn (like 3 or 4 to 1) and the rest is history. It is the only time I have gotten to see them play. It wasn't until fox soccer that I really started following them regularly though.

I don't think it's silly to root for a team you enjoy watching. I said earlier in the thread how much I love watching Liverpool play. The same goes for both of this season's Madrid squads, Everton, Dortmund and Arsenal when they are firing, and pretty much any match involving 2 really good teams. But I don't consider myself to be a fan of any of these clubs. I just really love watching the sport played at it's highest level.
I do, however, think it's quite silly to muster up hate for your club's rivals and proclaim your disgust for those clubs all over message boards. It just reeks of fake, fanboy, wanna be diehard bullshite to me. That being said, all of this may just be rooted in my mostly cynical opinion on the subject
Now if you truly are a genuine fan and that fandom came about organically, rather than just picking a cool team with sweet unis or something similar, then I'm not talking to you.
BTW I wasn't referring to you crazy4lsu. I just replied to your post because of the quote I wanted to use.
ETA Now that I think about it, my soccer viewing habits are very similar to how SFP described his. Seeing some of these incredible individual talents (Ronaldo, Messi, Bale, etc.) playing against each other is just so damn fun to watch.

How do you draw that line? What is an acceptable path to fandom for you? Are there certain things, on a checklist or something, that must be accomplished in order to achieve true fandom?
I mean obviously if people "like the way a team plays" and "root" for them but then abandon said team when players/managers change then of course they aren't a real fan. But what about those who picked, or got "picked", and have stayed with the team over the course several years through multiple player/manager/style changes?
I just am not following the difference between what you, and some others, deem acceptable and what is "fake, fanboy, wanna be diehard bull shite".

I agree. Well you could maybe say my favorite club is Stoke but I'm not die hard and I wouldn't really say I'm a fan or supporter. Rather, they're just a club I like a little more than the rest. I love the game and I don't feel the need to follow a team throughout a season necessarily.
