The average MLS TV viewing audience for the 2017 season is down 8% compared to last season, according to data aggregated by Sports TV Ratings and World Soccer Talk.

For the 2017 season through April 3, which totals 15 games, MLS is averaging 261,667 viewers compared to 284,842 after 11 games during the same time period at the beginning of the 2016 season.

While the news from ESPN and FOX Sports is rosier, last weekend’s TV numbers are concerning. The final Behind The Badge episode on West Brom that NBCSN aired on Sunday mid-afternoon had more viewers than the primetime FS1 MLS game between Toronto and Sporting KC on Friday.

Amazing considering the amount of growth the sport generally has experienced in the US. it's almost as if consumers are rejecting the American product.

On Attendance:

Yet even if that figure is correct, it still would mean more than 663,000 tickets included in the MLS crowd count for 2016 were given away. And even that math doesn’t always add up. Just look at Orlando City, one of five teams whose attendance was surveyed for this story. The club claimed home attendance of 532,500 this season at Camping World Stadium although the City of Orlando, which owns the facility, released figures Friday that showed the number of tickets scanned — the modern-day equivalent of a turnstile count — was 151,060 short of the team’s total, a difference of 8,886 per game.

quote:

Where it matters to the general public is when teams start making claims about the economic impact of an MLS team: If you really think you’re going to have 20,000 fans a night show up and spend money, you should be mentally replacing a large chunk of that number with ghosts. (You should probably do this for all pro sports, mind you, but especially for MLS.)

Incredible. Not 650,000 people who bought tickets but didn't go, 650,000 that were just invented out of thin air.

It's such a shame, I really want the US to have a league we can be proud of. Instead we have MLS, which takes all the worst aspects of the major American leagues and shoehorns them into a sport and world market which they are completely incompatible with. And then they wonder why 90% or more of the US soccer audience ignores them.

Or its proof that soccer is still the 4th or 5th sport in America, and the MLS has a crap TV deal.

I try to watch when I can. The fact there is only like 1 or 2 games a week that are on channels I actually get limits me to those games. Then comes the time frame.

I'm not watching on facebook and I'm not subscribing to the mls tv or whatever it is.

Get it on normal channels that normal people have and I bet youll see a rise in ratings.

MLS sucks bigly fam. Will never be successful, the best that we can hope for is that more regional leagues emerge organically as populations grow and interest in the sport increases. None of us will be alive when it happens.

Do you attend MLS games? Or watch them even? Or follow a team?

Why are you so happy to see something negative about MLS all the time?

I say all of that, and it really doesn't matter. MLS isn't meant for you. If you're team was started during your lifetime, then you aren't the target audience in the long run. I have FCD season tickets. Both of my kids play for FCD. FCD is their favorite team over any other team regardless of sport. That's what the MLS is targetting, and it's why the league will continue to grow and get better.

I don't know. Are MLS Live accounts or streaming taken into account? I can tell you that I watch a lot of MLS (the only sports league I am committed to following outside of just Liverpool FC), and the quality of the league right now is unlike anything it has ever been. It's kind of become somewhat of an Eredivisie lite, and I'm cool with that.

EDIT: Also TV ratings are down for everything. Across the board. Everyone I know around my age streams.

Paid vs actual is a problem is all sports. MLS is slightly worse because they have so many corporate tickets that go unused.

Only meaningful new information is that TV numbers are down, which definitely isn't good. Do wish they would go away from baseball TV route and try and get more national games.

I've been to a handful of Dynamo games

Im not "happy" per se. Like I said, I want us to have a great league here. I don't believe that's possible under the model MLS is pursuing.

It will get bigger because at the moment MLS amounts to a pyramid scheme and tax shelter for billionaires.

Will it get better? I'm skeptical.
