Tweets @HEGS_com, an Argentine soccer writer and podcaster, via an interview he just did with a TV station:

quote:

Lionel Messi: 'The national team is over for me.' Oh, Argentina.

Messi: 'I'm taking this decision for me and for the many people who want this. I've tried so hard, but I'm leaving without managing it.'

Worth pointing out that Messi has been VERY pissed off with AFA for a while now & has made it clear at times during this Copa.

Man... This is sad. I want nothing more than to see Messi score a winning goal at the World Cup

I can't see he retiring from international soccer at this point.

He's just really upset right now. Sounds like a knee jerk reaction to me.

Looks like Mascherano is calling it quits, too.

He's 32 I could see him retiring

It's crazy to me how Argentina have a world class player like Aguero but he struggles with the national team

Higuain killed Messi. 3 damn times in on goal in an important final, three times a miss.

Reading up on it some more I think he may actually be done with the national team. What is his beef with the federation? Sucks man, he gave everything for the shirt. He could have played for Spain and been a champion by now, but he wanted to bring a trophy to Argentina.

It's like there's a curse.

I think it was Messi who also sent in Aguero for a fantastic chance you'd think he puts on goal 95% of the time and he skied it to the 2nd tier.

Juan G. Arango @JuanG_Arango
ESPN Argentina now confirming Agüero and Mascherano "retirements"... also Lavezzi, Biglia, Higuain, etc. in the coming hours to days.

Damn. The U.S. is doing work on international soccer. First the FIFA indictments, then we host a tournament that kills the greatest player in the world's entire federation.

Stars as big as him shouldn't quit after a tournament that is played as often as copa America. Hard to take anything seriously in the heat of the moment. Think he'll go on at least two more years.

The AFA is fricked, which is why I think there are these slew of retirements.
