Can someone explain to me how Messi ends up in the United States playing soccer? Obviously I haven’t followed and just found out tonight on Twitter that he was playing in MLS.

Barcelona is a team he is tied to so he will never play for Real Madrid. Barcelona has financial issues and can’t sign him right now.

So that leaves him with England, Italy, and Paris St Germain. He tried Paris and didn’t like the atmosphere. Honestly it seems like none of the stars like it there.

Then there is Italy, which is competitive, but the salaries aren’t comparable.

Of course the big option is England, and I’m surprised he didn’t end up there.

Besides England, he could be here or in Qatar, UAE, or Saudi Arabia.

A ton of great players are choosing that last option but Messi thankfully chose MLS over Saudi Arabia.

Had he not won the World Cup, he'd either still be at Paris, found a way to get back to Barca or in England.

The plan was always to finish his career in MLS, specifically Miami. He's got nothing left to prove elsewhere now, so he came to the league a year or two earlier than expected. 100% he retires after the 2026 World Cup.

You think he would have gone to Man City if they lose to France?

I think he'd definitely still be in Europe.

I think he really didn’t like Paris and Barcelona just can’t happen now.

Man City or maybe even Newcastle or Chelsea seemed like the most likely options to me.

My fever dream was always him going to Tottenham and winning the league and watching SAF die of a stroke on live tv

I guess Man City would've been most likely so he good pad his UCL stats with one or two more wins.

It's going to be hilarious when MLS claims a ballon d'or after Messi wins it this year.

Because no matter how many might not want to hear it or defend the league, the MLS is still a retirement league. Beckham set that precedent and honestly I do not see that changing for a long time.

How do they change that? Does their need to be an increase in revenue for the league in order to attract talent?

The average age of a MLS player is probably 25 without pulling any stats. Hardly retirement age.

But that’s what I’m saying…Messi had one of the best games of his career on the biggest stage of the world just 7 months ago.

Any team in the world would want him, and the only reason he wouldn’t sign with them is if they couldn’t afford him or he had no desire to play for them (Real Madrid).

He is hardly at the point in his career where he has lost form and is just lazily getting paid off his previous reputation.

It’s a retirement league for big stars and a starter league for a lot of young guys.

It’s not getting stars in their prime

This will never happen... and that's ok.

As long as the academies continue to grow, American soccer will be fine.

Agreed it’s likely to never happen due to structure of the league.

It would need to get stars in their prime to move it out of retirement league status.

I don’t see that happening since they keep expanding.

Better academies and our best going to the EPL as early as possible will keep us soccer strong

Yep

But it does get old hearing Garber say it’s going to be a top league in the world and a destination league.

Obviously I meant a retirement league for the European leagues’ best players. How was that not clear? I mean it was stated in the context of a Messi in the MLS thread.

The league can change its structure completely and they still wouldn't attract international stars in their prime.

The only way to become an "international star" is to compete and thrive in champions league.

It benefits him and the league to say that. Give him truth serum and he would tell you that he knows that will never be the case for MLS.
