Am I the only one who thinks Aron Johannsen is very close to being the/a primary striking option for the USMNT?

He was everywhere he needed to be during the match, made intelligent runs, and was communicating with the others pushing forward VERY effectively. Nobody found him in the final third really, but he commanded attention and freed up space to create several first half chances. His strength was showing as well, something that didn't seem apparrent during his time in WC games (at least I didn't see it).

Don't get me wrong, I love me some Altidore... Johannsen is just turning into a beast right in front of our eyes. I can't wait to see him get hooked up with a Bradley pass or Yedlin cross.

He should have been before the World Cup.

No, you have at least one in agreement.

Yeah, he should have had two easy goals yesterday if a guy with a bad angle passes instead of shoots.

Also, Zardes hits about as bad of a ball as possible on a possible counter that would have set him up with a good chance.

I thought he did great yesterday with zero service. He got frustrated and threw his arms up a few times, and each was deserving. But his runs were great.

I don't think he starts over altidore in what we're doing, but gives Jurgy something to think about for two strikers and also can provide depth. I think he's a good option if we truly play a 4-3-3 or a 4-4-2. He's not if we're 4-5-1.

ETA - I was actually going to start my own thread about him later today.

Yea, that pass attempt was horrendous. Aron was wide open.

I agree with the op that he did make several great runs.

Glad to see I am not alone.

His hold up play was excellent as well. On that Zardes goal he was nearly dispossessed, but he dropped to his knees to retain it, immediately hopping back up to find Johnson with room enough to make that flip pass to Zardes at the far post.

Super impressed with him.
