I think we should let people do what they want within reason. White Sounders fans don't need writers for the NYT or anyone else to permit or approve of their behavior, and neither do Latinos.

Agree. But he's holding non-hispanic whites to a different standard. Which is the product of inherent expectation bias, and he's a total bigot who should be ashamed of himself.

I read this yesterday and this was one of the worst pieces about soccer I've ever read.

Exactly. Its about Nationalism. Not racism.

It just irks me to know end when people who were born in the USA, or took refuge (whether economic or social) in the USA, jeer, curse, and generally disrespect America/American teams in favor of other countries.

Anyone who is harsher in their criticisms of white people are by definition racists...towards all other races.

They are basically saying about latinos or blacks or whatever "Yeah but they cant help themselves, yall should know better"

I did agree with some of his premise about American soccer culture being directly tied to white guys who watch the Premier League and listen to Men In Blazers. The Latino soccer culture in America, which is more massive, does get overlooked in media coverage.

American soccer culture should form its own identity and not use everything it can from Europe. But making songs and chants and developing the knack to do it won't happen over night.

Some of the MLS chants and songs stolen from Europe are cringe with an American twist. While some other ones sound perfectly fine

Mexican fans. Booing another team's national anthem is classless. Booing it when it's also your own national anthem is an entirely different level of idiocy.

I wonder how the reporter feels about the "puto" chants. I guess he thinks white people should yell "fa.ggot!!!" every time the opposition goalie takes a free kick.

But wait, would that be cultural appropriation? Someone help me out here.

This is important. Some MLS fans are great and original. Some are European posers. Some even try to beat each other up to prove that they're the real deal. (Looking at you, New York.)

The problem is when you see one example and then extend that to an entire soccer culture, which is what this guy did.

I do find it funny the article is based on Seattle. Who's fan culture is a majority filled with the type of people most US soccer fans don't want to be viewed as. Craft beer drinking, liberal hipsters. Sure Seattle get good attendance numbers but their base is the ultimate cringe. The Sounders got decent numbers before the MLS but when the club joined the MLS it became the new hip thing to do in town filling the base with people who know nothing about the game. Their songs and chants are just well bad. The other night when I heard them singing Lets Go Sounders score a goal, score a goal goal ollllll. All I could do is shake my head. Stealing a German chant and using the literal translation in English sounds awful. NYCFC might take their place for the ultimate cringe support very soon. Both just feel very forced.

When I look at clubs like Portland, DC,LA, SJ,KC, Columbus and Houston you get that more organic feel from their supporters.

This was one of the biggest problems, that I had anyways, with soccer in the US was hipsters coming to watch USA games cheering for England or white American hipsters wearing El Tri jerseys rooting against the US. Since the 2010 World Cup it seems that it shifted for it to be cool for hipsters to support the US.

I'm interested to see what the fan base is going to look like in Atlanta. There are several different soccer subcultures to pull from in this area, and if they get a big-name Mexican...

Probably much like DC,LA and Houston.

I love how we have three different supporters groups all next to each other drawing from Ultra, Bara Brava and English type all next to each other.

A guy in my old unit in Germany used to be one of the mega phone guys for the Bara Brava even though he was black

MLS Commissioner Don Garber responds:
quote:

“It was poorly reported, factually incorrect and irresponsible, with a lack of any research whatsoever,” Garber said. “Frankly, something like this should never see the light of day."

“This was not some blog. This was the New York Times. They know better,” he added. “This is just not representative of good journalism.”

“It didn’t in any way remotely reflect the supporters culture in our league, or the demographics of our supporters,” Garber said. “I was absolutely astounded by the article.”

He did not mince any words.
