Just watched the 2002 Our Way documentary. Donovan had a shot against that Portugal that was deflected for an own goal. It was almost close enough to count it as an outright goal, but I know I am just biased because six WC goals would have been incredible.

I want Bruce Arena back as coach.

MOAR STUFF!

Roger Bennett LD Column

USMNT Players & Coaches Reflect on Donovan

Part 2

Reading those just reaffirms who hilarious it was when people were saying LD got left out because he'd be a locker room cancer. There was legitimate shock factor and sadness when he was cut from the team.

ETA: Also, this needs to be in this thread as well.

what time/channel is the game tonight?

that rog piece was a good read. he is definitely respected in mexico, i grew up right on the border and they always respected him and keller for speaking to the press in spanish.

i can totally see him walking around some university's campus in landyshades and a hoodie trying to blend in. hope he stays in connection with the game though, i liked his analysis in the WC this past summer. maybe pop up as a USMNT analyst when they play or something.

It still hasn't really hit me yet that he is retiring. I guess I just always figured he would be around, and the sad thing is that unlike Alexi Lalas, or Waynalda, his personality will be that once he quiets he won't be heard of again.

Also I wish Klinsmann would have just shut up this week. He won, no best USMNT player in the history of the USMNT on the team. He won so just shut up and get out of the way.

I think the reason he is going out of his way to shite on LD this week is to basically rationalize his decision to leave him off the plane to Brazil. And not just rationalize for the public, but to rationalize for himself.

It's a shame that Landon Donovan made everyone around him better but was still dropped from the team. Just imagine how effective Brad Davis' left foot would be with a presence like Donovan's on the field. Too bad Jurgy was too short sighted to see that.

As always, everyone's going to get all butthurt, but I don't think what Jurgen said was even that insulting. If you're soft, maybe, but otherwise, I agree completely. I think Landon could have played at the highest level and been an elite player in the world. He chose not to, and that's okay. It's not an insult to insinuate that he could have done that, though. I believe it's a testament to his skill.

That doesn't discount what he's accomplished in this country. It doesn't discount a damn thing he's done, but it's completely okay for people to have differing opinions. It doesn't mean respect isn't there. People act like it's wrong to say Landon could have played at the highest level consistently as if it's an insult. It isn't. Very few people have the skill to be truly great at that level, and Landon showed flashes of it several times. A lot of us did want to see him grow in a better league, but instead, he chose to grow our league. There's nothing wrong with that. It's just stupid to act like it's offensive to say he could have competed against the best in the world every week and flourished in that environment.

It's fine to say that a few weeks after the game. Not when US Soccer is going out of its way to throw Donovan a sending off party and with the whole "should LD have made the WC" debate still going strong.

If you don't see how fricked up and tone-deaf that is on JK's part, then I'm sorry.

It may not be offensive on it's face, but it most certainly is very fricking offensive to say it to the press the day before his testimonial match with the USMNT.

Klinsmann should have shut his fat fricking mouth this week and let Landon have his farewell. Klinsmann won.

And honestly, it's another brick in the wall of the "Klinsmann can't stand Landon being the face of USA Soccer" narrative.

Just shut up, Klinsmann.

In other news, JK and Donovan still haven't talked AS OF THIS MORNING.

The pettiness, from both parties involved, better not ruin what is supposed to be a great day in US Soccer history or I'm going to be so pissed.

It is when Jurgy picked an MLS journeyman over him for Brasil.

Jesus.

Highlights from Landon's pre-match press conference -

-Klinsmann is not there, only Landon and Sunil Gulatti.

-Says that if you had asked him 3-4 months if this day would ever happen, he would have said "No way, you're crazy".

-Gives 100% of the credit for today happening to Sunil Gulatti and thanks him for working hard to make this match happen.

-Says he thinks today is a day he "deserves", thinks it's a day his family deserves.

-Says tonight will be very special and hopes he gets to thank everyone personally.

QUESTIONS

-"What was your initial reluctance to accept Sunil's offer for this match?"
It's not revealing to say this summer was difficult for me, and thought of being in this environment again didn't seem all that appealing. There are difficult moments in life and I've been the beneficiary of mostly great moments in my soccer career, being treated well MOST of my soccer career, being selected when maybe I shouldn't have been, I've had the benefit of the doubt most of my career, this time it went against me and it was difficult for me but at the end of the day, I looked at the big picture and realized what a special day this could be. It's almost like it was meant to be, I believe it's no coincidence that it's 10/10 today. The way it came together was beautiful and I'm glad I get to a part of it and I want to enjoy it."

I'm not going to argue this to turn the thread into a pissing match out of respect for the day. I am thankful that we had such a great player, and I'm thankful for the fricking incredible moments he gave us. It sucks to see there be an alternate plot line developing. Cheers to Landon Donovan, a real American fighting for the rights of every.
