No we were clamoring for a better partnership in the central midfield that would allow for him to play box to box and not be stuck in the deep midfield all game

Bradley as the number 10 was a result of Jozy going down, right? That injury was pretty much the worst thing that could have happened. It's amazing we made it out of that group without him.

Does FIFA not allow for alternates to step in in the case of injury to someone on the final roster? And if they do, how the frick was LD not even an alternate?

Because Jurgy is a moron and didn't bring a like-for-like replacement for the most important piece of his strategy.

You really can't argue with this. You have to have a back-up for your main strategy. When Jozy went down, we went to Plan C. It's a miracle we made it out of the group. And hell, if Wondo didn't choke, we would have been into the quarters.

As much as this has been brought up, it's almost like it isn't brought up enough. Dude missed a sitter that would've been the biggest goal in American history. And because of the circumstances of when and where it happened, he will never be able to make up for something like that.

I think Dempsey not making the 5-footer off of that awesome freekick play was just as gut-wrenching if not more so.

Yeah but at least he kept it on target. Courtois just made a great save. My boy Wondo choked. He lost all his technique and just leaned back and skied it. Not even close.

For how close he was, it really did defy the laws of physics.

I think we all agree that Bradley is currently better suited in his box-to-box role. It seems like Jurgen just remembers the greatness of Bradley's 45 minutes against Mexico. That being said, Bradley was out of his mind during those 45 minutes. If he was eight inches shorter and had hair, then I would have sworn we were watching Lionel Messi.

I think we are definitely at a point where Bradley can try to learn the role of a center attacking mid, but he is just so much better at his B2B role. I would never want to start as our #10 in any serious match.

Ideally, we should be pairing Bradley with Wil Trapp. The dude is cerebral as frick on the pitch and always checks his shoulders. I really want to use Lee Nguyen as our #10 because he has killer passes that just shred a back line and great creativity.

Obviously, I am one of the biggest critics on Jurgen, but I have to applaud his move of Jones to center back. The lack of discipline spiel is very tired and honestly not really true anymore. Jones is one of the best players in the world that is USMNT eligible, and it is critical for him to be in the starting XI for as long as possible.

I strongly prefer the 4-2-3-1 and I am sick of Jurgen constantly trying to force the diamond on the team. It rarely works.

It seems like the board's opinions on this are pretty mixed, but I want Yedlin on the wings and Fabian as an outside back. I trust Johnson's defending so much more. Yedlin has crazy pace, but he is still pretty mediocre defensively at this point. Plus, I would make sure Fabian is on the same side as Deuce because he obviously gives zero fricks about defense.

Dempsey-Nguyen-Yedlin
Bradley-Trapp

Rosters are "finalized" 10(?) days before the tournament. If someone gets hurt bad enough to not be able to play before the tournament starts, you can petition FIFA for a replacement, as long as the severity of the injury is agreed upon by FIFA's doctors. The replacement can come from any eligible player in the player pool (so there are no definitive "alternates", per se.)

Once the first whistle blows in the first match, what you've got is what you've got.

Please take all of that with a grain of salt - that's how I remember it. I could be bass-ackwards on all of that.

The diamond can work for us because I think Fabian and Yedlin can handle the work the fullbacks need to do. And I think Yedlin's actually improved a good deal defensively. His shortcomings defensively are of inexperience and maybe some intelligence/tactical awareness issues. I thought he did superbly on Eden Hazard.

The key is finding someone to sit in front of the back four and someone to play off Jozy. Dempsey is still that guy for now. Can Rubin/Bacon/someone else emerge there? Will Bradley be that destroyer (doesn't sound like it)?

Because Fab and Yedlin (I'll throw Garza in there, too) are so offensively minded, I'd love for us to go 3 man backline (or 5 man depending on how you look at it) with Fab and Yedlin as the 2-way wingers.

I agreed about Yedlin on the wing until an article I read pointed it out that his ceiling is much higher at back than at wing, due to his lack of touch. For now I think Fabian is more dangerous/useful to us close to goal. Plus, I don't trust Johnson's defending all that much to be honest. He didn't track his runner against Ghana for Ayew's goal, had a stupid giveaway that led to a goal against Ireland, etc.

Here is the lineup I would like to see if we do the 4-2-3-1:

Altidore
Dempsey-Nguyen-Johnson
Bradley-Cameron
Garza-Jones-Besler-Yedlin
Howard

If we make it a 4-4-2:

Altidore-----------Dempsey
-------------Nguyen
Johnson------------Cameron
-------------Bradley
Garza-Jones-Besler-Yedlin
-------------Howard

What I really like about this lineup is having Trapp on the left playing the ball up to Trapp at the top.

Until we see the lineup in the games leading up to the Gold cup, I am taking everything said by Jurgen with a grain of salt. He's gonna tinker with the lineup, rustle some jimmies, and we will still be fine.
