I'll be attending my first world cup qualifier for the USA this Friday. Looking at the standings, it's almost a must-draw at worst type of game...

Just wondering how we stack against Panama. Also they're expecting storms for this game now... so I don't know who that favors.

I wouldn't say "in trouble" but it's far from a gimme. Our last 4 matches against them resulted in D-L-D-D

Long answer:

The majority of our players are the textbook definition of average. Not awful. Not terrible. Just average. When a bunch of average players (mixed in with a couple very good players and one world class player) only get together a handful of times a year to train and then play two very important matches, you will often times see a wide range of performances and results.

Short Version:

There’s no fricking telling what will happen.

You have to factor in though that Panama is in the exact same position with even lesser talented players.

True. But like I said, when you’re dealing with 2 teams that are capable of playing great or awful on any given night, literally anything could happen. The odds are in our favor, especially playing at home. But having already lost 2 out of the 4 hex matches we’ve played, that might not really matter that much. I’m scared to death we’re not going to qualify. Holy shite it would make for a lame summer if we have to watch the World Cup without playing a part in it.

lol, I love Christian as much as the next guy, but lets slow the roll here.

He's not top 10 in his position in the world and isn't even a top 50 overall player in the world.

I disagree. But I’ll put it this way - For the past year, he has played at a world class level. I watch a ton of soccer. I know you do too. I haven’t seen 50 players in world football that have made the impact he has. I guess it’s too early to definitively say he’s a “world class” player. I guess it all depends on what you consider to be world class. Basing my opinion on what I’ve seen from such a young player in such a short amount of time, he’s no doubt in the discussion for top 10 at his position or top 50 in the world or whatever the qualifier may be. He has been absolutely incredible for club and country.

He's been thrashing CONCACAF. Doesn't make you world class.

Yes, he's been great. But in terms of wingers, Robben, Bale, Ronaldo, Neymar, Coman, Sterling, Mahrez, Reus, Sanchez, Rashford, Martial, Henrikh, Di Maria, Sane, Mertens and Dembele and are some I can name just off the top of the my head.

That's at least 16 people and some of those guys aren't even world class.

Are you leaving out what he's done at Dortmund on purpose, or...

I just said he's been great there? How many people are World Class at 19 or however old he is now? Almost none. You can't be a world class player after like a year of being a first team regular.

ETA: he has 65 career first team appearances. It's a joke to consider someone with that many games under their belt world class.

Nope. Real Madrid is less likely to play awful on any given night than West Brom. Great teams are great because they CONSISTENTLY play great. There are less wild swings in form for really good teams. The USMNT is not a really good team.

You realize what you basically said earlier amounts to the sports cliche "games aren't played on paper", which is said anytime an upset happens, right?

The original point was that the US is not good or bad enough to predict a result on Friday. You came back with the idea that this applies to Panama also. And you’re right, it does. Then you said this line of thinking can apply to any game between any two teams. That’s where you’re wrong. It’s easier to predict the result when the teams involved are either great or terrible. The great team is likely to win. The terrible team is likely to lose. Matches involving two average teams, especially average national teams, are hard to predict. That’s all I was trying to get across. There’s no fricking telling how we will perform against Panama or Tuesday v T&T.

That's a cop out.

The US is a more talented team than Panama and is playing at home. The more sound predicted result is a US win.

Doesn't mean it will happen, but to say you can't predict a result is idiotic.
