Brazil's display yesterday is the most striking example I've ever seen.

I went back a watched the four goal sequence, and it was incredible how undisciplned Marcelo and David Luiz were, and how poor the body language of every defender except Marcelo was, even when it was 1-0.

Zonal marking is a must read today.

Also big nod to Jogi Low, who exploited Brazil's left. The third goal was beautiful, with Ozil overloading the Brazil left and Lahm bursting down the channel.

Low giving up on the Lahm midfield move was an obvious move, but my God, he handed Scolari his arse. Thiago Silva may have helped slightly, but it still would've been 4-0 ish.

There was no tactical master plan yesterday, Brazil simply quit after going down early without their captain and their talisman.

I think everyone, except Brendan Rodgers, understands this.

From the ZM piece:

But the long-term question is more serious, and must concentrate on why Brazil has stopped producing world-class attacking players – which meant a dependence upon Neymar, underperformers like Hulk and Fred guaranteed of their place

This is the key IMO. Brazil could replay that game today and fix a large portion of what went wrong defensively.
There's no fix for Hulk and Fred, and it's shocking that they were considered by anyone to be the best Brazil has to offer. It was almost funny to watch Hulk yesterday. Lots of running and dribbling with no real idea of what to do with the ball.

Good read.

Its just a cycle though in my opinion. Right now they just don't have as many top notch world class guys like they are use to having. But its wild to think that a brazilian down year for attacking players is to have options of Neymar, Pato, Hulk, William, Fred, Robinho, Jo, Benard, Oscar, kaka, Lucas, etc.
Plus all these guys had the potential to be a top guy but fell off for whatever reason. All but maybe a Germany would prbly take this list every world cup if given the option for the next 5-10 world cups.

I talked about this yesterday and everyone jumped on me for it because I wasn't sucking the German bandwagon cock.

yeah, it's quite shocking how far they've fallen. they really need bernard and lucas moura and oscar to take things to the next level before the next WC.

pretty amazing how guys like pato, damiao, ganso, etc. have flopped. Wellington Silva starred at a youth tourney and he's sucked since we bought him. piazon doesn't look like he's going to make any impact.

I don't even think they quit until the game was well out of reach. I think that they just lost their shite out of desperation after the first goal

Hulk has been awful, he is awful, and he will still be awful in years to come. I thank God that Zenit bought him instead of Chelsea when I remember how close he was to coming to London.

Hulk was bad and combined with Marcelo playing more advanced than Fred the entire first half that side was wide open for Muller

Speaking of Fred, watching Brazil this entire tournament I couldn't help but feel that they were essentially playing down a man with Fred on the field. If the stat is out there I would guess he probably had fewer touches per minute played than almost all players in the cup. He was basically useless. And what shocks me more is that he was Brazil's first choice striker

Fred was a magician out there. I've never seen a disappearing act quite like his.

it's amazing really. I don't know their depth well or what other options they have but when Jo came on their striker play was even worse.

I don't really think they have that good of a true striker option. They haven't really in my opinion since Fat ronaldo. Fabiano wasn't bad and peaked at the right time for the 2010 WC. Pato never really panned out. None of their others really are true fits.
Granted Germany doesn't really have a true striker besides Klose and when he hasn't been on the field they still have been fine. Same with Spain in the last WC.

Their reaction after the first goal was absolutely incredible. It´s as if they´d never played the game before. Bombing up willy nilly like that, as if only second half stoppage time remained.

I'm surprised that we didn't see that kind of reckless abandon earlier in the tournament with the way they acted before every single game. I guess that Thiago Silva's presence and Neymar's ability to actually do something kept everyone reasonably in check.

Still think Felipao should have done something to change the game after Kroos's first. Guess he figured that it couldn't get any worse. Can't really blame him.

More baffling circumstance...

A country with the size, population, and football pedigree as Brazil starting Fred and Jo

or...

A club with billions of dollars choosing between Torres, Eto'o, and Ba

A club with billions of dollars choosing between Torres, Eto'o and Ba when they have a proven goalscorer loaned out to another team in the same league.

Chelsea

Minus Diego Costa, Brazil can't really help it, and in a perfect world, they would have had elite striking talent available for this World Cup.
