You can still jump on the bandwagon. We're about to sack AVB, and all will be well again.

Plus, Zenit is owned by honest, hardworking, Russian businessmen. How can you not like that?

Does not compute.

AvB, what an epic fail he has been.

No he hasn't. He just won the title with Zenit.

Which isn't hard. All you have to do is be better than CSKA, and they had just sold Doumbia and Honda last year. Plus, his brand of football is terribly boring for a team with superior talent. He just lost at Petrovsky to Krylya Sovetov ( a newly promoted team). When Zenit crashes out of Europe, AVB will be sacked.

Regardless, he isn't a failure. He's an incredibly successful coach at an incredibly young age. He was thrust into the big time in a bad situation in a team that couldn't play a high tempo high pressure style. He'll probably be a top level manager for years to come, at maybe a Ranieri level.

Lived in Leeds (Rothwell)in '97. My friend's cousin was Alan Smith. He was playing U17 for United then. He used to come around and hang out with us because we were older and cool. All my pals were United fans. Went to Elland Road for a few matches. shite, Leeds was actually good back then.

Hated to see Smithy go to Man U., but I'm glad he got paid. It was very cool watching him get carried off the pitch at his last match with Leeds.

To think that people want TNBhoy to go away with some of the stuff you spout out.

Still haven't told us why your story is the only legitimate reason to support a club.

sure my turn.

Starting supporting United in the mid 90's as a kid after playing soccer a couple years already and was crazy about it after the 94 WC.

Back then it was slim pickings on what teams were shown on tv. Pretty much the only teams from England on tv were United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea sometimes for champions league coverage and UEFA Cup coverage.

I picked United as a 10 year old and stuck to it. I remember sprinting home from the bus stop after school to get to my house not to miss a min of the 99 final back when they used to be in the middle of the week.

My love for the club got even bigger when I finally went to OT a couple years ago and was lucky enough to see them win the league in person. That took my fandom to a whole different level. Its like a drug once you see and experience it in person.

I never really had a German club and used to watch alot of Dortmund back when Rosicky played for them but never jumped on full support. When I moved to Germany my city had a team so my German club is FC Kaiserslautern who has been chilling in the 2 division since 2012. I lived a 15 min walk from the ground and had season tickets for two years.

If I didn't have an English club before getting stationed in England id probably be an Arsenal fan bc they are a 40min train ride away and the train from my town to London stops at their ground on the way.

I never said my story is the only legit one, but that bullshite McBro is trying to spin is down right hilarious.

Fair enough.

I guess my point is that the people who are cousins with Alan Smith and who have relatives that work at Goodison, etc. could pick on your fandom the same way you do with others.

And they'd sound just as silly to me.

It must be a soccer thing because I was on a UK football board many years ago, and they liked to talk about their fan pedigree too.
"Ya well my grandfather played with Sir Stanley Matthews."
"My grandfather WAS Sir Stanley!"

On and on it went.

To go the question, I don't have a team really.

-I like Crewe because my kids had a coach who was from there.
-I like Sunderland because I got sick of the Geordies picking on them.
-I like Everton. Same reason except Liverpool fans.
-I like Southhampton. I guess they would be the team I'd most like to win the league and don't have a good reason.
-I like Charlton. The story of the Valley and their fans is cool.

-I like Arse style of play. Not the team necessarily.
-I have a soft spot for City because my kids played for a coach who was one of their superstars years ago and a truly good guy.
-Used to hate Chelsea, but Drogba was just too cool and Jose has grown on me. Steve Spurrier with a scowl.
-Hate Liverpool because they haven't done anything in years and their fans act like they have.
-Hate ManU worse. Arrogant managers (other than Moyes who I like a lot) and fans. No offense
-Hate Celtic for no other reason than one of the worst people I've ever know personally was a fan.

edit: and SCH-CSB. Serious.

calling a non English man a plastic doesn't hold much water

but now calling someone from England a plastic will get people going.

Chelsea and City fans from England get called plastic bc they only show up when the team is good or a whole bunch of more people started supported them after their take overs. Even now with City the hint that they are not in great form or playing a top club not as many people go.

Now with United and Liverpool fans being called plastic, it stems from basically the 50's and each club being successful and having their fan bases grow domestically and now across the world. Throw in also lots of people from the north west have left for the southern parts of the country and took their fandom with them passing it along to their kids who keep passing it on. Thats why United and Liverpool are so big in London.

Other teams fans always rag about both clubs fans catching the train from Euston to Manchester/Liverpool and its true

Arsenal fans are viewed as just nerds a lot of the time.

True. Still dumb to me.

meh. Sounds like most sports to me. Why pay money to watch crap. Being that guy that was in the stands watching the Saints when they were terrible sounds more like poor financial planning than anything to me.

I can see this discussion in England now.

"I love the Saints!"
"You didn't follow them before 2009 mate!"
"Not true. My friends sister brought me beads from Mardi Gras in 2001 and I was hooked."

European sports culture is just different than ours.

Clubs are so much different than Franchises.

Even more so in Germany where the fans own part of their club. My team was still pulling around 30k while playing in the 2nd division.

Dortmund having a total shite year was still pulling 80k a match.

The thing about that though is that the clubs in the EPL are not really clubs anymore. They are owned by foreign billionaires. They are now franchises and Americans are following the big ones.

I understand the club mentality over there, but human nature dictates that the old club days are waning.

No they are still clubs and still are very much part of their local area. Not the watered down experience of professional american sports. The fans do still have some what of a say bc we are members. Not a much in Germany when they actually are part owners.
