"In the next six months, we've got to come together and develop a plan with our ownership to determine when we go further, because we will," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said Friday during a meeting with the Associated Press Sports Editors. "We will expand this league beyond 24 teams. It's not an if, it's a when."

...

"I believe that we can expand and manage a league far larger than we are today without having to contemplate promotion and relegation," he said.

...

"I will certainly tell you in the near term, and that near term is a long time from now, there's not going to be promotion and relegation. It makes absolutely no sense. There is not a developed secondary division. We have union agreements. We have national television deals. We have investors that have put in billions of dollars. It is not going to be something that could be managed in anytime soon."

And now we wait for SCH to catapult his two cents in here.

Actually ive never called for promotion/relegation in MLS.

These owners pay to much for these franchises

The franchise model sucks but the promotion/relegation infrastructure would have needed to be there from day one and we would have need at
least 30 clubs from the start to establish this. Not sure the casual American fan would also support their team being dropped into the minors.

Would it be cool to see The Rochester Raging Rhinos or NY Cosmos in the MLS?? Or The Crew playing in Charleston after a shite season

Of course but its not going to happen

He's right.

American sports are based on media markets. MLS would suffer some serious money losses if LA or either of the the New Yorks got relegated.

yup it is what it is. The country is also way too big

Thats why the lower leagues are more on a regional level with the conferences

hell even in Germany the 3rd division and lower is broken down regionally.

i agree with him 100%
wouldnt work without a single table, and the 2nd tier just is no where near good enough

plus 2nd division NASL only has 11 teams

That and American sports landscape is also driven by individual star power. We don't have enough for it to go around.

your picture is perfect haha

I hate all the bullshite conferences in American sports, but that will probably happen in the MLS if they keep adding teams. And it will be split into 10 conferences with teams having to play there conference opponents and then sprinkle in some out of conference teams. With Regional playoff and yada yada. I hate that model but its what will happen in the future when there is 30+ teams.

Promotion/relegation can't work with salary caps.

Yeah, well the NASL is chartering the likes of Fort Lauderdale to Edmonton and Ottawa to Atlanta.

It's a glamorous lifestyle, flying coach from Ottawa to Atlanta and getting choked by some random passenger

It's hard being the best player of a 2nd division club on Parliament Hill. Always a target on your back. Much like being a Prime Minister

Derby matches in the biggest cities (NY, Chicago, LA, Houston etc.) could be big...excluding the Chivas bs. Also, mid sized markets with only one other sports team makes sense to me (OKC, San Antonio, Sacremento etc.). Dead zones like Atlanta and Miami should be avoided imo.

Uh, ATL is coming 2017 and they have over 15k season tix pledged with 2 seasons to go. So much for a dead zone.

I agree that it won't work, but it is too bad. The bottom of the table can be as exciting as the top as we get to the end.

It is well over 20,000 now by the way. The team in Atlanta has been an insane success so far in terms of gaining a following.

It is awesome having Bocanegra playing an integral role in developing the organization.

You mean the city that has the fastest growing Latino metro population in the entire country and a widespread love of the game out in the suburbs might actually work?

BUT THE FALCONS

Thats why United were so big. Our latino population boom happened from the 80's and until right when the league started.
