Uefa will announce on Friday whether the Europa League winners will be rewarded with a Champions League qualifying spot from 2016.

So what is the SB opinion on this?

I have no idea how this could be a bad thing.

I don't mind if it's in addition to the top 4 (or whatever) from a country...

It should definitely be in addition to a league's allotment.

However, I don't think this goes nearly far enough.

If the Europa League is to mean anything to clubs that play in the toughest leagues, I think you have to at least reward to top 4 with CL places. Those places could be staggered (for ex. finalists into group stages, semifinalists to playoff rounds).

Clubs in top leagues just have no motivation to do well in Europa unless they can get lucky with mainly bench players since Europa League runs almost always mean dropping points in League races. The promise of only 1 CL spot to the winner won't do anything at all to change that.

If Europa League is to attract TV interest they have to achieve a sense that the teams playing actually care at least a little bit and at least 4 CL spots would be a step in the right direction. It would also make CL better in that you'd add 4 more teams that could at least threaten to advance.

Uefa is also expected to announce it will raise the maximum number of Champions League qualifiers per country from four to five, if the winners of the Europa League from 2015-16 do not finish in their domestic league's qualifying places for the Champions League.

I think this is a great idea and I also agree that all 4 semi finalists should get spots.

I also think that the Champions League should mandate that all countries give their main cup winner a slot in the CL as well. At the group stage.

Ideally I think the two that make the final should get spots, but one is definitely in the right direction. Maybe make the winner a group spot and the runner up a playoff spot.

Can we do this for the damn Champions League winners too? What happened to Spurs last year was TERRIBLE.

According to another article, the only time that you would get Spurred is if both the EL and CL winners are from the same country AND both are out of the top 4 (highly unlikely).

All we need now is for UEFA to put main cup winners in

I'd rather them use those spots on more Europa teams. Most country's association cups are still VERY highly regarded. Everyone wants to win the FA Cup, Copa del Rey, Coppa Italia, etc. We don't really need to reinforce motivation for the competitors in those cups.

I can't speak for every cup, but the FA Cup is clearly not as prestigious as it was 10-15 years ago and to many fans and clubs finishing 4th in the PL is a bigger accomplishment because of the $$$ and the prestige of the CL. IMO that's not the way it should be.

#2 it gives clubs an alternate route to CL glory

#3 it's called the CHAMPIONS League, not the top 4 league.

#4 it will put additional pressure on those too clubs because then they would be fighting over 3 spots instead of 4 and force them to focus on the FA Cup as much as the league which will improve the quality of the competition.

I disagree. I think its still a very big deal to every club.

That's absolutely the way it should be. The CL is the most prestigious tournament in the world right now. It is the be all, end all. Any continental cup should hold that prestige because its basically deciding who is the best on the continent.

Best in Europe > best in England. That seems like a normal logical progression. There's nothing wrong with the FA Cup playing 2nd fiddle to that.

Unless you have an Interim manager with no respect for the club, its fans, or players and only cares about a worthless trophy on his CV.

The last two seasons the loser of the FA Cup final decided to sack their manager before the game was even played and made it very clear that even if they had won it they still would be gone. Doesn't seem that valued to me.

Sure, winning the CL should be a bigger deal but I disagree that it should be more important to qualify for a tournament than it is to win your countries top level knockout cup.

I understand the why most because of the money involved, that's why is like to see the FA Cup winner get one of those spots.

We didnt decided to sack King Kenny before the FA Cup final... Actually, it would probably have made it impossible to, had he one... I still think it's a big deal, bigger than the cups in most other countries..

I was in England at the time and it was pretty apparent he was gone regardless similar to Man City's situation this year.

I'm a LFC supporter and comb countless sites daily for information on LFC and while he may have been on the proverbial hot seat, it was FAR from a given he was going to be sacked.. Again, he may well have been here this year had we won the FA Cup...

Well the prevailing wisdom around the country going into that game was that he was done regardless.
