84', 73' ... what unit of measure are they using to delineate the distance the goal was kicked from?

Not in the US, but are you sure that you're not misunderstanding that they're saying the minute the goal was scored in?

Why one would report the time a goal was kicked? never occurred to me.

So you can tell the way the game went? In case you couldn't watch all of the game?

They also report the time that players get cards or subbed out.
