San Jose and FCD tied on points

SJ goal differential MINUS 21 (4th worst in league)
FCD 0

But SJ had more wins so they clinched final spot

It seens odd and ive never heard it elsewhere. But maybe its a good idea? Minimizes a gane where score got out if hand, puts focus in winning

It makes more sense than goal differential.

we should adhere to the rest of the world on this...

Goal differential means every goal matters and also encourages teams to keep attacking up 3 or 4 goals... soccer fans are just more familiar with it than trying to explain that a team had more wins

I agree that GD should be the tie-breaker over wins, but it's not even the first tie-breaker in the UCL.

So it's not unheard of.

Pretty sure La Liga doesn't use differential as the 1st tie breaker.

There's good arguments for both systems, IMO.

MLS would argue that making most wins the top priority would force more teams to go for the win on the road instead of sitting back for a draw.

FC Dallas would argue that having a 21-goal better GD than San Jose makes them the better team, but MLS can just say "you should have won more games, then".

San Jose is kind of a weird case. They're good at home, but they play like hot garbage on the road, and those lopsided scorlines add up over the course of the season. Dallas' collapse in the second half of the season is baffling. On paper, they are one of the best teams in the league.

I believe it’s head-to-head in La Liga.

I'm an FCD fan, so I'm biased here. But wins doesn't make sense to me. Sine losses should also be a factor if wins are. And while SJ had two more wins than FCD, they also had four more losses.
