United States striker Clint Dempsey is being tested for an irregular heartbeat and will miss the Seattle Sounders' game on Sunday against the rival Portland Timbers as well as upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The Sounders announced on Friday that the 33-year-old would be held out of the game at Providence Park (5 p.m. ET, ESPN).

Dempsey was rested for the Sounders' midweek game against the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday, but the club did not say if that was because of concerns related to his heart.

A U.S. Soccer spokesperson also confirmed that Dempsey will not be available for the World Cup qualifiers at Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on Sept. 2 and against Trinidad and Tobago four days later.

This may be serious. I hope he is okay. Arrhythmia can be controlled with medication but it can also be indicative of a dangerous condition.

All aboard the pain train of a Wood/Altidore pairing!

Seriously, this sucks. Every game I watch I find myself saying "Good grief, he is SO lazy." But then he scores, and we typically win when that happens.

Hopefully we see a lot of Nagbe and Pulisic Sept 2nd and 6th.

Also, Seattle has had a rough year. As soon as they begin a roll, this happens to the club.

Hopefully not serious. Weird that he would develop something now. I wonder if Jurgen considers calling Kljestan and (gasp) playing him in his natural position, or actually starting Nagbe.

Does seem very weird considering the testing these guys probably receive on regular basis. Wonder if ekg is showing up as incomplete right bundle branch block. I had an ekg in my late 20s that one MD referred to as an "athletic heartbeat" then found I had the RiBBB at 35. Often worries MDs initially. I have one and multiple excellent cardiologists have assured me that it's absolutely nothing to worry about and can occur more often in people who are well trained cardio wise. Rationale for that line of thinking is right ventricle more "muscular" especially as we age a little and the delay or "block" is more a result of taking slightly longer for electrical impulse cause full firing due to exercise induced hypertrophy as opposed to an impulse issue itself.

Not really. Last thing I found was an article on the 10th but sounds like it's hush hush

quote:

CLS: What's the word on Clint Dempsey's heart arrhythmia, and is there a schedule for his return yet?

SaH: There is no schedule for his return. While US coach Jurgen Klinsmann seemed to think he'd be back quickly, things from Seattle are very quiet. This is not a "no news is good news situation." Clint Dempsey is vital to the success of the Sounders. He is rather important for the US National Team. For now, there is no public timeline. Instead we watch, we wait and we pray that he's just going to be OK, as it's something with his heart and soccer is so far from the important part of that.
