Put it this way, without LD, soccer in America isn't nearly as popular or advanced as it is today.

Landon has been a great generational US soccer ambassador, he may be the greatest player in US history (dont know, long history mind you) but these kind of histrionics always make me laugh.

Check in when you watched the '86 WC as a kid and fell in love with the game and then realized there was no US team participating. When you started to wrap your head around qualification etc.

That 1990 WC team though, lost every single game but they were there at the WC....Harkes, Meola, Ramos, Wynalda Vermes all were also part of the reason the sport is as "popular and advanced as it is today". Its all about perspective.

I don't care that you don't like him... It's just that your reasoning makes zero since. I'm not trying to convince you to like or do anything, just wanted a sound argument from a differing viewpoint.

Alas, it didn't happen. You lost me with the whole "Dempsey will STATISCALLY go down as the better MNT player"

Right but think of all those guys you named... Now let's say you went to a sports bar and struck up a random conversation with a sports fan... Any chance they know those names? Probably not.

Not only is Donovan the most successful player to put on the crest, but he was also the first Anerican to really enter the mind of mainstream sports fans.

See, thats not the point. Its always been a gradual climb up the stairs. From not even qualifying from 1950 to 1990( 40 fricking years) to expecting to qualify every year. It all depends on when you decided to climb on the USMNT pain train I guess.

That 1990 team, a US team that had not made the WC in forty years; think about that, 40 years, laid plenty of trail for those that came after. Things were much different then when you look at media coverage etc. I guess my point is that Landon is a great, maybe all time great, American player but he doesnt define US soccer for those older types that remember a time when there wasnt ANY US soccer during a WC.

For those that may be interested here are the USMNT World Cup Group A games from 1990. We have come a long, long way in a relatively short time people.
vs Czechoslovakia
vs Italy
vs Austria

yeah there was a time when i thought clint would surpass landycakes bradley, too then both came to America and took a major downward trajectory

Yea coming home for a big pay day and playing down in competition has def hurt their quality.

Landon Donovan will be forever remembered as a player who was too shite to ever actually make it in Europe, unreal that he's put up on a pedestal the way he is.

that's a bit unfair

he just didn't have the chest for playing abroad long term. His heart was always set on being in the MLS.

This isn't even a comparison. Its really not close. And the people who do think its close, quite frankly, have a very low soccer IQ.

/thread

CD isn't half the player LD was

If Dempsey gave a shite more than 40% of the time on the pitch, this might be a legit thread.

their roles also changed from where they were at their peak. demps moved inside to pure striker and badley plays up as an AM

that makes it even crazier. he still became really, really good while playing "down in competition"

Eh. I love them both. Not sure why people have to choose one over the other.

They're completely different players and both bring a unique light/personality to the team and our image.

Donovan in 2002 gives him the edge overall though. That shite was fricking epic.

And "bit part at Everton"? He tore it up while he was on loan there. No doubt in my mind, given the right situation he could have done close to what Dempsey did at Fulham given a full season.

And that's not taking away from Dempsey's season, Landon is the most gifted US soccer player ever.

In 10 years If you showed people outside soccer a picture of Lalas and LD I would say more often than not would know Lalas

Eh I don't know. It definitely depends where you are.

Here in Texas, most people would say Dempsey. I have friends who don't give a flying frick about soccer and the only player they know is Clint because he's from here.

I'd assume it's Landon in most parts though.

It was Reyna for me, since he was a City player before I ever got into the national team.

If you could time travel. If you went to anyone at a bar during Lalas prime. And went into a bar during LS prime. I would say more would know Lalas. So the argument of landing spreading it to mainstream can be argued

There are a number of players with larger personalities and different ethnicities that brought soccer to a larger audience outside soccer. I don't get the skilled white guy that a few think acts entitled to spread it outside soccer

Sure, a lot of people remember the crazy red-head and bearded guy on the 94 team. Not many people know that his name is Alexi Lalas.

I don't think they would remember his name unless they recall it from seeing him on tv recently.

If you go into a sports bar in 10 years, most in there would have never seen Lalas play.
