Donovan was making at least $3-4 million from sponsorships alone in 2010, mostly from Nike, Gatorade, and Pepsi.

Kind of unfair to compare a retiring LD to 16 year old "emerging star".

I don't under stand how people on here who are a soccer fans are trying to argue over who the average non soccer fan knows more now when clearly sports marketers disagree. The average non-soccer fan probably can't remember Tim Howard from last men's World Cup, but might recognize a Women from their's because it just happened and their marketed pretty heavily more current.

Landon (who is at the forefront) , Clint, Howard and Bradley will likely be talked about as the core that made soccer a big deal here in the States. Three had somewhat successful careers in Europe, while Landon established the MLS here at home. I won't be surprised at all if Landon has somewhat of a Michael Jordan-esque reputation to him in 10-15 years.

you are speaking of soccer fans who already know this
I'm talking about non soccer fans who don't care about any of this.

Those are the players that the non-soccer fan is most likely to know.

they are more likely to know whoever is current in a sport they don't care about. If they don't care about soccer now, you think they care about who used to be good?
They know who they see highlights of on TV when watching sportscenter and it happens to take time away from REAL american sports and show a highlight of soccer.

what is more of a possible scenario in Arkansas with non soccer fans
"Hey bob this guy is asking me about a soccer player. Whats that chick that was on the cover of the swim suit issue, didn't she play soccer?" "Hope Solo, shes hot"
versus
"hey bob this guys asking me about a soccer player. Who's that guy that talks about soccer on the TV ever so often when that sport comes on the TV? "i don't know bill i usually go to the bathroom when those gheys are talking."

Yes, and those people that have made the most highlights are Dempsey, Bradley, and Howard.

They will also remember Donovan because he was making highlights for the previous 15 years in a row. I haven't watched a baseball game in 16 years , but I still know who A-rod is.

I work in AR and just asked everyone in my office to name a USA soccer player.
Results:
48 Pele's(yes I know he is not american)
1 Mia Hamm(daughter use to play-i asked)
1 "that crazy lady that beat up her nephew.
1- "that female d@k! thats always on the tv crying about something"
1-"that chick that looks like a dude"
2 messi-again i know he is not american
and wait for it...

1 Sidney Leroux- Yes our one token black guy in office knew who she was from the body issue. although he butchered her last name.

My office is predominantly male, but looking at non-soccer fans. A lot of them are not even sports fans either so haven't seen him for the last 15 years but the Women's team has been on Magazine covers at every check out counter grocery store and most morning talk shows including Oprah.
The Women's team is marketed as sex appeal to men.(even non-sports fans)
Their marketed to Women as empowering.
It is easy to see how more people outside of sports know who the women are versus Landycakes.

Of course you do. He played for one of the largest known teams in the world, in one of the largest media markets in the world. Not only was he known in sports circles he was known outside sports circles only on account of all the known hot women he dated. Plus he received a lot of coverage for his drug use. I'm a soccer fan and besides actually watching him play have never seen landycakes in the news or any other context outside of sports besides the one time a decade ago he was on Letterman. I am not a baseball fan but have seen A-rod in the news quite often this past decade. Heck I've probably seen this more pictures of A-rod with some hot girlfriend than I've seen games has played in

Probably 2 years ago during the World Cup. Maybe a little bit last year when he retired. I don't know. I don't watch shite like the Today Show.

His sportscenter commercial from a few years back was good, too. The one where the printer gave him a card.

I busted out YouTube to show my wife and kids those during last World Cup. Wife didn't play so didn't understand why I loved it so much. Kids kept insisting s show them the Nike on where kids call out players name and transform into them. They loved Howard->hulk transformation
