I truly hope Lukaku's performance today cements his place in the lineup next year. Dude went off to today.

He went off all season. We definitely could've used him.

I agree with what you are saying but I have only heard stories of him being put out on loan next season. Demba Ba and of course Torres have been a complete let down in the league. Roman will overspend for a striker whom we can only hope will perform for us in the league and CL.

I'll post this here since it was the last post on the last page and probably nobody saw it (in reference to Rafa):

He did a pretty good job.

Solid cup runs and a Europa league title. Kept the club in the position in which he received it. Pretty good squad rotation and balance over a massive amount of fixtures. All after taking over in the middle of the season with no exposure to the squad.

Did some things unconventionally/strangely, but got the job done.

A+ would have been 2nd place and the FA Cup + Europa League
A- would have been either 2nd place or the FA Cup + Europa League
B+ is 3rd place and the Europa league

Genuinely interested in what Chelsea fans think.

I'll never understand his sub tactics or some of the lineups he put out, but at the end of the day, he got us where we needed and his time is done. When Roman hired him as "interim", it just added fuel to the supporters than didn't want him. I say thanks, but move along.

I am sure this is the sole reason for Torres' poor play this (Premier League) season

Here are the moves that I hope we makes this summer. Part of this is what I hope happens and may not be best for the team necessarily but I want to see a certain player in blue next season.

CF - Keep Lukaku next season. I would love to see him work with Mazacar and even if he isn't world-class next season, he will have gotten great chemistry formed throughout the season and will be world-class the year or 2 after. Keep Ba and try to get Torres to take a pay cut but that may be unlikely.

Wing/AM - Seems to me like we will be buying Schurrle so I will include that here. Gives us nice depth. Possibly recall de Bruyne, which I will discuss below. Loan Piazon again, this time to a PL team possibly, or don't loan him at all. In the future, if Mou implements a 4-3-3, I would like to see Oscar back in the midfield and play deeper.

DM - One of 2 options in this spot imo. I want to either buy Fellaini or get Ilkay Gündogan from BVB and if we were to get him then I am sure that we would have to give them de Bruyne. I really like Gündogan and giving up KDB would be tough but I think it would be worth it. We keep Essien and Mikel can give us some depth, and then keep Chalobah, who I think can contribute next season. Also if we could try to sign Modric that would be great, but I don't see it happening (plus he's not necessarily a DM but a DLP so I put him here).

CB - Get a partner for the future for David Luiz. I think Luiz is still best as a CB and right now he is our best CB, so unless we sign 2 CBs then I think he should stay in the defense for at least another season.

LB/RB - Buy a young LB that could replace Cole in a few years, and get a backup RB so Azpi doesn't have to play so much next season. Brani can also fill in at RB along with being 3rd CB.

GK - Recall Courtois. I think he is ready to start for CFC but with Cech still here obviously it is a tough situation.

Honestly I don't think we need to buy many players this summer, so as to not mess with our young core. In just about every position, we have either a young guy that is already starting or a young guy ready to take over, so I don't think we should mess with their confidence by signing a ton of new people just for the heck of it.

In the end, I hope our lineup looks like this next season and we use a 4-3-3 primarily:
CF - Lukaku, Ba, Torres
LW - Hazard, Schurrle, maybe Piazon
RW - Mata, Moses
CM - Oscar, de Bruyne (maybe), Lampard
DM (2 starting with 1 CM) - Fellaini/Gündogan, Ramires, Modric, Chalobah, Essien, Ake, Mikel
LB - Cole, Bertrand, new guy
CB (2) - Luiz, new guy, Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill
RB - Azpilicueta, new guy
GK - Courtois, Cech

with this as our starting lineup:
------Courtois------
-Azpi Luiz NEW Cole-
--Fel/Gün---Modric--
--------Oscar------
-Mata--Lukaku--Haz-

again, this is just what I hope to see and may not be the best option, but I really would like to see this. of course, we are Chelsea so we will probably sign a ton of people

Just for kicks I'll take your points and insert what I hope for...

quote:

CF

My ideal would be to sell Torres and buy a top striker (Falcao, Cavani, Jovetic etc...) That guy would get first crack at being the man with Lukaku and Ba battling it out early in the season for backup and the 3rd guy being a Cup player and sub.

quote:

Wing/AM

With the Schurrle deal looking to be set I'd guess we are pretty well finished here with Hazard, Oscar, Mata, Moses, and Schurrle with Ramires available to go out wide in a pinch. I'd like to keep, and bring back, KdB and see what he can do with a season in the EPL but from everything I have read we would sell him as part of the Schurrle deal. I'd rather keep KdB myself. I'd be pretty shocked if we didn't loan out Piazon again next year.

quote:

DM

This is Luiz's home for me. I think he has been mostly brilliant since moving more to this role and it fits his style much better than CB. Partner him with a mix of Lampard, Ramires, Essien, and Mikel and I think we are set here. Chalobah on loan again and be ready to take Essien and/or Lampard's spot the year after in a backup role. I have high hopes for Chalobah.

quote:

CB

This is where I disgaree with you most. As previously pointed out I think Luiz should be primarily in the midfield. I'm assuming you just totally forgot about Cahill, as nickhole mentioned, but he, Terry, and Ivan (with Luiz available in a pinch) will suffice in this role for me. This is going to be an area that needs to be addressed next summer for sure though as Terry will probably be done (or a bit player at best) and Ivan will be 30.

quote:

LB/RB

If Bertrand isn't going to be Cole's heir apparent then there does need to be some discussion about what to do at LB. We either need to sign a younger guy this year and loan him out or we are probably going to have to spend big next summer for a guy that can come in and start immediately.

I've been underwhelmed with Azpi, not that he's been bad, just very average for me. I actually prefer Ivan at RB. However, I don't think we are going to make many moves here as Azpi is clearly the plan for the future. Ivan and Essien can give him spells when needed.

quote:

GK

Keep Cech at least one more year, he's still the man for me. Courtois wants to go back on loan to Atleti and we should let him. He's getting great experience there.

quote:

Honestly I don't think we need to buy many players this summer

Agree just another attacking mid (preferably a out and out winger) so Hazard, Mata, and Oscar can get some rest. I was against a big name striker last summer but I think if we want to get back to winning PL titles and making consistent deep runs in Europe it's time. With our midfield it's too big a shame not to have a dominant forward in there for them to feed it to.

So for me...

CF- Ba, Lukaku, new signing
AM- Mata, Hazard, Oscar, Moses, KdB, and Schurrle(though I'd prefer a stop gap winger like Robben),
DM- Luiz, Ramires, Lampard, Essien, Mikel
LB- Cole, Bertrand
CM- Terry, Cahill, Ivan (Luiz sparingly)
RB- Azpi, Ivan (Essien sparingly)

Get rid of Marin, Benayoun, Romeu, and Torres (though I'd be bummed to see him go)

True, seems like a loan candidate for next year though.

We still own Patrick van Aanholt right? I guess he doesn't figure to ever be viable player for Chelsea though at this point?
