Saying he's level or "more effective" than Zidane I can't quite get on board with and I'm a big Totti fan.

I can see this and that Totti never played with a "stacked" roster makes it even more subjective than usual with ranking players. At the time of Zidane's move to Real, there was a pretty lively debate though as to whether they'd gotten flashiest instead of the best #10 in Serie A.

Baggio?

He's certainly on the short list as should be Platini though -- like with Maradona -- I've only watched them after the fact.

Watching Riquelme was sheer pleasure.

I think people are thinking more in terms of classic #10 playmaker/trequartista/enganche.

Messi certainly has the passing ability/vision to eventually "fit" in this list in the future. I think it would take a slight change in position that he's not too likely to get playing with Barca anytime soon though.

For me, Messi doesn't quite fit in that he plays more often as a striker than really a pure trequartista even if he does pull some amazing strings with his passing but so does Ibra et al.

Pirlo sits a little deeper but his distribution deserves consideration in this topic.

He does. love him. But, not really a traditional "10".

Pirlo belongs among the top of the Regista / Deep Lying Playmaker thread someone should start next.

If it was simply about the number, the entire board would deserve a ban for Pele's name not being mentioned yet.

So we're talking post 70's? I guess that would rule out Toshack since he was more a striker in those formations.

Whatever, frick you guys. He is still the best.
