Nah there are rules that allow some to switch
So when Americans go bananas when kids with dual citizenship choose to play for the US, that's all just on the hope that the kid decides not to switch?

Once you play a match for the senior team, you are tied to that country and can't switch.

false
for example Jermaine Jones has three caps for Germany.

If you're capped in a FIFA-sanctioned tournament, you must play for that team from thereon.
Think of it like this: John Brooks made his USMNT debut in a 2013 friendly against Bosnia and then, I believe made 2 or 3 more appearances in friendlies prior to the World Cup... had Matt Besler not gotten hurt in the World Cup match against Ghana, forcing Brooks to sub on, he still could have conceivably been on the US World Cup roster, but also still be eligible for a Germany call up.

I meant in an official match.

Don't forget, players can also switch in situations like Kosovo's.

You can apply for one-time switches. Mostly applies to those who have only played in friendlies.
quote:
Players are generally not allowed to switch nationalities but friendly match appearances do not commit a player to one country; Jermaine Jones played three friendlies for Germany in 2008 but has played for the United States since 2010.[20] Thiago Motta has three caps for Brazil in matches deemed friendlies for Brazil (participation in the CONCACAF Gold Cup as a non-conference guest team) and now represents Italy.[21] Mehdi Carcela-González was born and raised in Belgium, and won two caps for Belgium in official friendly matches before switching to his ancestral nation of Morocco in 2011.[22][23] Diego Costa represented Brazil in 2 friendlies[24][25] before switching his allegiances to Spain in 2013,[26][27] going on to represent the latter at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Apostolos Giannou represented Greece in a friendly in 2015,[28] before switching his allegiances to Australia, making his debut for the latter in March 2016.[29] A FIFA Player's Status Committee is responsible for making such judgements.
