if gibbo is long-term injured

I seriously hope he isn't. He could be so good if he didn't get injured constantly. That said I sometimes wish our wingbacks wouldn't be positioned up the field so much. Gibbs seems to stand 40 yards to goal and waits for the ball to rotate to him. For some variation we could use some late runs from both fullbacks, especially when teams settle in and are drawn to the ball. Monreal is way better at those sorts of runs, though he hasn't done them consistently since his first season here.

I'm not sure Debuchy is an upgrade on Sagna, but he will do until one of Chambers/Jenkinson/Bellerin is ready to take over. He's a good player defensively, but going forward I don't know if he is as good as Sagna was.

We looked like shite in all honesty. Alexis dribbled way too much, Sanogo was anonymous, Giroud wasn't any better in truth, Santi lost the ball way too often, and Wilshere and Ramsey couldn't link with anyone. I'm so glad we got 3 points out of this game.

On the positive side, Chambers looks like a really good CB. He might displace one of Koscielny or Mertesacker. I'm also not sure how fast he is. It would help if he was as fast as Koscielny so we could play that high line.

This was also a game made for a player like Arteta. He did a pretty spectacular job recycling possession and filling in the holes in the defense. Not every team will be as toothless as CP going forward. They could barely complete 5 yard passes.

It seems Wenger is committed to this Ramsey-Wilshere partnership, and I think it's possible that it could work without Arteta if both are a little more patient driving forward. But it seems unlikely that it could work with Ozil. It would have to be another player ahead of them.

I feel like it will take a while for this team to gel. How Ozil fits into all of this is going to be very interesting. There wasn't any space in behind the D today, but if we have another season of static movement I'm going to kick a puppy. I was immediately annoyed at Alexis's dribbles. He has fantastic close control but he just holds onto the ball way too long. He had a decent debut though. Hopefully he will help us in games where it is more open. We will see how we do in the middle of the week though. It's going to be a tough game.

I think the opposite actually, he gets beat for pace a lot but usually makes up for it will a well timed tackle or something though.

Debuchey is better than Sagna going forward, but lacking defensively. Or at lease he isn't as good as Sagna

3 points, no one is going to remember how or why in a month. Atleast we aren't ManU.

Debuchy is probably better with the ball at his feet, but Sagna had a nice whip to his cross, which would have been useful in games like this where having a good crosser of the ball would have helped us with the way CP was organized, not that Sagna was particularly accurate because of how few players we usually have in the box. That said, these are my early impressions. I'm interested to see more of our new signings.

Fullbacks push too far up. Santi just was off, wilshere holds on tothe ball to ling and gets tackled more than any player in the bpl. I like debuchy, but he def plays too far up. And just weird not seeing sagna out there. I thought kos played excellent minus the goal he gave up.

Just checked, Jack was fouled 6 times. Get rid of the damn ball boy!!!

It wasn't pretty, but we got 3 points. People said our team last year couldn't dig deep and get the job done, this result is huge.

Think I've decided to go with the Gunners as my EPL rooting interest. Enjoyed watching the game today and looking forward to the one next week

In one of his post match interviews Ramsey mentioned that he and Wilshere talked at halftime about how without ozil they had no one floating in between the forwards and midfield and consequently both felt they had to hold on to the ball longer than they wanted to due to lack of options

last year, we got more points than anyone versus non-top 5 squads (maybe non-top 7), often in situations like this where teams were sitting almost entirely behind the ball. it was by far our best year of grinding out results in the Emirates era. hopefully we can retain that gritty play and add to it with better performances against top competition.

we need özil for Everton.

Welcome Les. You've made a good choice.

My favorite sports teams are similar in culture and Arsenal reminds me a lot of the St. Louis Cardinals, my favorite baseball team for the last 47 years.

Both are highly respected, have a lot of tradition, and a culture of winning. Their fans are loyal, knowledgeable, and not a lot of bandwagoners like the Yankees/Manchester United.

Arsene Wegner is a lot like Tony LaRussa was as a manager--a genius who sometimes over-thinks and is very stubborn to stick with his way (as opposed to a frustrated fan like me who doesn't know near as much as he does.)

And like the Cardinals, even with this new era of big signings, Arsenal doesn't burn money throwing it at one signing after another in the manner of the Yankees/Chelsea/Man City.

The club has a loyal, knowledgeable, and long-term following. I'm sure you'll enjoy getting acquainted with the Gunners and their storied history.

So if Arsenal land Rabiot where will he play? I haven't seen him play, but reading up on him says he's a central midfielder, and I thought Wenger's plan was for Chambers to play CDM in the future?

I think Arsene is blowing smoke. Chambers is fantastic at CB, and while this is probably 100% premature, I think he could be our long-term answer at CB, especially when Kos or Per move on. We need to keep him here. I'm talking John Terry-esque rock in the back for 10+ years, minus the massive douchebaggery.

I feel the same way about Arsene and Miles, but i have been following Arsenal way before Miles was coaching at LSU.

Hey Cwil, I was speaking of the Cardinals.

My Rams-fannery shows I am not a bandwagon fan who'd scurry to put on a ManUre or City kit at the first sign of adversity.

And no, I have no St. Louis ties. I've been a Rams fan since 1967, when they were the Los Angeles Rams.

Kinda coincidental too that Stan Kroenke ended up owning both the Rams and the Gunners.
