On the day of her farewell, U.S. women's national team star Abby Wambach called for U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann to be fired and blasted him for bringing in "a bunch of these foreign guys."

quote:

"I would definitely fire Jurgen [Klinsmann]. Sorry Sunil [Gulati], sorry, U.S. soccer, but I don't think Jurgen and this litmus test on him has worked. He hasn't really focused, I feel, enough attention on the youth programs. Although he says he has, I don't think that he has," Wambach told Simmons. "The way that he has brought in a bunch of these foreign guys is not something I believe in wholeheartedly. I don't believe in it. I don't believe in it in my heart.

Every person that has played for the USMNT is a US citizen, and has gained that status through conventional means.

She is a crazy. She went on a rant about not being paid what men make in soccer. Where would this money to make up the gap come from? Or where would the mens money go?

quote:

I feel the men get paid way more than the women in soccer, yeah, I understand logically the argument about the ratings and that is more global. But that doesn't mean that it makes it right.

That's just a terrible argument. So, in her mind, he should set up a better youth system then play shitty players until the youth is ready to take over? Two of our top performers in the last WC were Germericans (Johnson and Jones). I don't care if it is a loop hole that gets them in a USA shirt. If they want to play for our country, we will take them. We don't have the luxury to pick and choose guys.

Yeah. She damn near sunk the USWNT in Canada. It was no coincidence that the play of USWNT improved significantly when she didn't start.

Her argument was hysterical.

They're talking about how the men's World Cup winner won $500 Mil and the women's World Cup winner won only $15 Mil, and so she goes on this pay rant. At one point she goes (direct quote) "and it doesn't cost anything to treat people equally. It would cost us nothing to treat everyone equally."

So it will cost us nothing to go from $15 Mil to $500 Mil?

The theme of her arguments are valid, but her elaborations and points are kind of stupid.

Yes equality. Pay is never going to be the same, if I had to guess, the closest women are to equality in professional sports is tennis with soccer probably being close to the bottom. There just isn't a huge demand outside of wnt games. This victory tour is amazing for their game. It's great she plans on being an ambassador for the sport, but it's a long road to where she imagines the sport going for women.

The argument over emphasizing foreign players....I get it. Everyone wants hometown heroes, someone they can associate with. When you can't pronounce their hometown and you need subtitles to understand them in an interview, it doesn't seem as personal. Nothing against those guys, I know some of them are more patriotic than the average American Joe.

Is it possible she's talking about the coaches or technical staff when referring to foreign guys?

Even if she's talking about that, she's wrong. Most of Jurgen's staff are Americans.

Thank god she is gone so we don't have to hear her big mouth. I like athletes that don't spout off.
