Got nostalgic and was looking up some old US Soccer vids and I came across the 05 Gold Cup Final where we beat Panama in PK's. I remember winning this, but my memory of how we actually did it was vague.

Why this is somewhat relevant to this board in present day? Well, just watch and see who converted the penalty that sealed the win. (hint: it's not the guy in my avatar)

I think I heard John Sutcliffe, which still has the least unlikely Mexican name

That was such a sweet left-footed strike to seal it.

Sisqò's attempted bicycle kick was pretty great but his pk was weak sauce.

Quaranta took the first one. I didn't really follow soccer when he was relevant but wasn't he a good youth prospect who started playing in MLS at a young age?

Also does anyone know who Panama's keeper was? Looks like a really young Penedo but I'm not sure.

Don't need to watch the video - it was Brad Davis.

I had sort of forgotten about Quaranta. He was another young prospect who started playing MLS when he was like 16. Started with DC United (of course). He burned out early, and I think may have had some substance abuse problems. I looked up his age, he is still only 29

Yep, he liked his crack rocks.

It's Penedo.

But back to the point of this thread, Brad Davis is clearly an American hero.

Got caught up with drugs and whatnot. By the time he got it straightened out, he was in his late 20s and injuries were starting to pile up. LINK

It was still good to see him get a runout in the 2009 Gold Cup with the Kenny Cooper All Stars after he got straight.

($10 cash to whoever can name this starting 11 without looking it up.)

Penedo, back when he gave a shite. He's been Panama's keeper FOREVER, like Valladares for Honduras.

ETA: So much for the "late 20s". I can't believe Quaranta's only 29. He retired a couple years ago.

Broski vs. Sheep in the octagon for the title of #1 USMNT Fan. Two men enter - only one comes out alive.

I thought it was fairly well known that Brad Davis converted in this shootout because it is the most recent shootout in USMNT history.

Top row: Jimmy Conrad, not sure, Robles, Cooper, Heaps, Quaranta
Bottom row: Cronin, Davy Arnuad, Stubear, Parkhurst, not sure.

9 out of 11 is not bad.

ETA: Brad Evans? He looks so different in that photo.

Wouldn't have got Clark regardless.

Parkhurst looks absurdly bow-legged in that picture.

I was shocked to find out that was Evans as well.

I knew #13 was Colin Clark, because he was on the roster, and I'd never be able to recognize him. Process of elimination.

Ah, the good old days. I remember being excited about this and mentioning to my friends how I couldn't wait for the World Cup the next year with our A squad (How disappointed was I, right?). I'll never forget one of the responses.

"I hate soccer. Every year everyone gets excited for the World Cup and then no one cares anymore. Let's see if you still care in 5 years!"

Typical "I heard my redneck dad say this once and repeated it". I outright told him that that was the dumbest thing I'd ever heard and explained how the World Cup cycle worked. You better believe I reminded him every day during the 2010 World Cup that I still cared 5 years later, and I still remind him every year how much I love the team. He's actually a fan now, though, so he's forgiven... But it will never be forgotten.

Funny thing is that as far as we've come, that shite is still happening. We visited my girlfriend's parents house a lot this summer so I was there for a long time. Because I was always watching and explaining it, they were pretty into it by the end. My girlfriend's little brother, who is turning 15, got really big into the sport, though, because I made him watch the World Cup and play FIFA all summer. Kid loves Zlatan already even though he wasn't at the World Cup. His friends all made fun of him for it, but he held strong. There was one day where we picked him and one of his friends up from workouts in the morning, and on the way to drop his buddy off, we turned the tides and ganged up on this kid. I was like "Heard you've been talkin' shite, bro!" He gave me this long speech about how no one will care after the year, and I told him the story about my friend telling me that almost 10 years earlier. My girlfriend, her brother, and I spent the rest of the drive grilling him with questions like "So you've been a fan of everything you've liked since you were born? You've never become a fan of something in your life? Why are you giving people such a hard time about liking something, bro?" It was all in good fun, but I think it helped my girlfriend's little brother feel better about enjoying it. I definitely got joy out of turning the tables on someone for once. The Sport of the Future since 1972 is getting there, guys.
