You can tell a lot about a culture by looking at its art

This vomitous jumble of colors and vague images could have easily been painted by an emotionally disturbed 3rd grader. But it was painted by an artist named Basquiat, who died of a heroin overdose.

It just sold for $110 million.

I am convinced that back in the 50's and 60's repressed gay men in the art world conspired together to convince idiots that the most rudimentary of paintings was high art in order to inflict payback upon a society that spurned them.

Sounds like you are jealous that you're crappy attempts at art aren't worth that much. Art is interpreted differently by everyone. Don't hate on what you don't understand.

Precisely

"Art" affords the opportunity for the stupid to appear smart.

"Oh you just don't understand it."

I can appreciate beautiful art. The Renaissance era paintings are beautiful. Picasso pieces are great. I love all sorts of music. There are pieces of music in just about every genre that I can appreciate. As a "conservatarian" Christian, my favorite novel is nearly 200 years old and was written by a radical atheist. I have a child named after a character in this book.

But this is garbage.

You realize that Basquiat was incredibly famous in his time and is considered one of the most important artists in modern art history...and he died extremely young, adding to his "legend", right?

Just because you don't like it or "get it" doesn't mean it doesn't hold value to others.

I drew something eerily similar on the cover of my chemistry notebook in high school.

Little did I know, at the time, that I was one needle away from fame and fortune.

I'm with you here... Blue Dog is great for koozies and t-shirts... but there's an entire art gallery devoted to Blue Dog paintings.

To each his own, I guess.

I used to work in a very high end restaurant. People with this kind of disposable income don't make purchases for the same reasons you or I do. There is something about that part of society that places tremendous value on being seen and talked about. I used to be amazed at the number of people that weren't enjoying their meal for whatever reason, but would eat it anyway because they feared being seen as complaining.... when it comes to making a purchase like this, it's not done simply because it's a great piece and worth millions. It's done because it's a way of being seen and talked about in that society.

Basquiat is a big name in the art world. These type of paintings sell more based on the artist than the actual art.

What makes an adult’s scribbles different than those of a toddler?

Years ago, the television sitcom, “Bosom Buddies”, touched upon the same question. The character of Kip Wilson (played by Tom Hanks) was a commercial artist trying to make a name in the fine arts community. He manages to have some of his work displayed in a gallery and, though the paintings were wonderful, the critics only had negative opinions.

When asked by Kip what they thought of a painting that was simply a white canvas with a large red-orange circle in the middle, the critics gushed the highest praises.

At that point, Kip looked at the painting, back at the critics and shouted, “It’s the flag of Japan!!!”

Indeed, the painting was the same design as the Japanese flag… That show, too, asks that age old question of what makes something a work of art.

"My mama always said you can tell a lot about a person by their shoes, where they going, where they been."

This is like when you see someone on welfare but yet they have the newest $250 pair of Jordans.

Oh and we might as well add $700 phones that just came out on the market.
