Have been really busy with work, and am ignorant of the meaning of this term as it relates to the current political climate. Thank you for informing me.

I think it means releasing names that were previously redacted bc the information was confidential.

Getting names of US citizens that have been redacted in intelligence reports. Only certain officials have that authority from what I gather.

These people are wrong. It is someone who was recorded (spied on) while actually spying on someone else. Example, they have permission to spy on you. You call me on Thursday after work for a beer and they spy on me also by association. My name should not be released. Basically what they did was spied on someone around Trump so they could spy on Trump.

I believe that's called "incidental collection", Unmasking ks basically removing a source nickname and revealing his true name. As in "SOURCE A Told Trump to grab her by the pussy" becomes "Vladimir Putin told Trump to grab her by the pussy".

U.S. intelligence agencies routinely do legal surveillance of foreign nationals thanks to a section of law in the "Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act," generally referred to as FISA.

FISA only authorizes electronic surveillance of non-U.S. people, but it can pick up communications in which a U.S. citizen is one of the parties in the conversation.

When the phone call or other communication is eventually transcribed into an intelligence product, the name of the U.S. citizen is not supposed to be identified in the document, to stay consistent with FISA. Instead, the intelligence agencies use a simple alias, such as "U.S. person number 1," rather his or her proper name. This is known as masking.

However, there are times when the intelligence agency needs to know the name of the person in the communication, and so they must ask that the alias be removed. Removing the alias is known as "unmasking."

No that is not what it is dumbass. If I have a warrant to spy on you and your mother calls and I listen in I am spying on her also. I would not tell anyone your mothers name.
