So, you're saying it's always been this way?

No. Pay your obligation with post-tax dollars as you agreed.

Theres two things taxpayers would lose out on:
1)interest from the student loans
2)taxes from the funds to repay the debt

See students actually get double fricked to pay back student loans. Because in order to payback say $100k in loans, making $100k+interest isn't good enough.

This is just dumb. Nowhere in the promissory note did either party stipulate that.

Hah, nah not necessarily. This was later in his life and in the last 10-15 years. Can't speak for before that. Its also worth noting that we're talking about a low income town in the south decimated by garment factory work leaving the area 20-30 years ago.

So it's dumb for me to have the opinion that you should pay your loans back without gimmicks and getting discounts elsewhere such as taxes. Fine.

Having an opinion is fine.

Stating that it would be breaking the terms of the agreement when it doesn't isn't.

Also where is there a discount? Surely it's not in the principal being being back (with interest mind you). Why shouldn't people be able to spend as much as they make instead of wasting it on govt bureaucracy?

Tax payers are actually relieved of some burden, though.

Using income based plans, balances unpaid after 25 years are forgiven.

Also, PSLF forgives loans after 10 years of public service.

I'm currently planning on using PSLF. If I could pay my loan with pre-tax, dollars, I prolly wouldn't need the forgiveness
