I can't imagine any circumstances where we would ever need a large conscript army, too easy to destroy large masses of troops.

I can imagine a need for special people, like doctors or some other skill the crappy all volunteer force can't attract, but I can't imagine the political will to ever use the draft again,

The detachment of the American public from the military by eliminating the draft was a major mistake, but we continue to make them with the military.

This

I would never volunteer to fight abroad in a war that I disagreed with.

Is it really necessary to have a draft again? War has changed a lot since the last draft. I don't think a large army is needed to fight wars anymore.

I am 36 - the only way they'd draft someone my age is if the U.S. was in serious trouble. Given that fact - my answer is yes.

If they're only drafting people <26 then its probably just another war of convenience, in which case, my son isn't allowed to go I'll tie him up and ship him to Canada if I have to.

Just to add context to this thread, the United States held a peacetime draft from 1940 to 1973.

A "draft" does not necessarily have to coincide with active war (although much of this time frame was during the Cold War, EDIT, and yes, WWII, Korea and Vietnam). But not all...

Elvis Presley was drafted when there was no active war, for instance.

If there ever is another draft it will be because we are in dire trouble....the military does not care for conscripted service....

If they drafted old men like me we would be in serious trouble....bad knees, bad backs, etc etc etc....that being said I probably wouldny have much of an option if it got to that point...either die as a soldier or die as a draft dogger dead is dead....

When I was at LSU there were 15-20 Tiger football players in advanced ROTC, which meant they and me were already E-3s. Ronnie Estay was a cadet colonel. ABC Sports even did a piece about it during that '70 football season. Nobody liked the draft, nobody wanted to go to Vietnam, but most guys did the right thing when the time came. All I see here is a bunch of self serving wimps.

Nope, I never see one happening.

It'd take a WWII like war for a draft to be reinstated and accepted.

In a heart beat.

I wanted to sign up, but I had to get part of a lung taken out in high school.
