There is a precedent.

We've worked with them before.

We teamed up in WW2 and we worked out a good deal with Alaska.

We hate Russia because they were commies during the second world war and we were told that that shite was going to spread across the globe like wildfire...of course were also told in the same breath that it was a terrible system of economics and would inevitably fail of its own weight...which of course it did.

We need to hate russia though so we can justify spending more than the next 20 some odd countries combined on the military. Selling the American people on the idea that China is a real threat is tough seeing as how most of us can't be bothered to read an entire bumpersticker let alone a newspaper article and no one is sending us facebook articles about how china is going to get us all....

Russia is not a real ally but they also do not have to be an enemy either....they aren't as much like us as the rest of Europe mainly because a huge portion of Russia is Asian and not Europe at all...and as such we are never going to be as close to them as we are Germany....but they are easier to get along with than the Chinese if they ever decide to be assholes....

Finally I think we should encourage Russia to take on the middle east. We have oil here we don't necessarily need it as badly as Europe does....and the world would be a much better place if Europe was actually paying the true cost of their oil instead of relying on us to keep the spigot flowing for them....and, most importantly, Russia can become the great devil to the idiots in the middle east!!!! Nothing like being bogged down in a bunch of unwinnable wars to keep you occupied!

i can't understand why we would have an adversarial relationship with the Russians.
We are wasting way too much money hating on them. We need modern schools, roads, bridges and rural health care.
I really don't understand why the democrats don't love them with them both being socialists.
I'm sure defense contractors ( and the politicians in their pockets) on both side love the adversarial relationship.

Before anyone starts thinking that Russia is going to be this huge anti Muslim ally, remember...

Islam is the second most widely professed religion in Russia. Islam is considered as one of Russia’s traditional religions, legally a part of Russian historical heritage.[2] According to surveys, the percentage of Russians who consider themselves Muslim ranges from 5% to 14%, the majority of whom are Tatars.[3] According to a poll by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center, 6% of respondents considered themselves Muslims.[4] According to a Reuters news article by Robin Paxton, Muslim minorities make up approximately 14% of Russia's population.

Integral to understanding the downfall of the United States is how some people realized how easy and voluminous the money for defense contractors was during World War Two.

Ever since the Korean War the people of the US have been presented with one bug-a-boo after another. This phenomenon has how reached perfection, a war on TERROR! Something that is impossible to defeat.

Not to mention Israel. Oh my goodness! They get carte blanche from us because it is great for the Defense Contractors. Expand their settlements - inflame the Muslim world? Who cares if a few dozen Americans get slaughtered every once in a while. It is good for business!

It is wrecking the country.

What we have to defeat now is the Military/Congressional Industrial complex or we won't have a country.

Some just believe everything they're told.

I've been saying all of this for 2 years on this board.. it's good to finally see others having the same tone in regards to US/Russian relations.

and this! The whole world would benefit greatly with the two biggest power/force projectors on the same page and not trying to undermine each other

The Germans launched into the USSR with 3 million soldiers, including large numbers of minor allies - Bulgaria, Hungary, even some poor souls from Spain. They didn't have enough of a logistical tail to supply all that force. When they captured literally millions of Russian POW's, they had no capability to feed them, and no plans to feed them given the Nazi racial policies.

The Germans would just herd huge numbers of Soviet POWs together on the steppe, lay barbed wire all around them and set up up machine guns to fire along the barbed wire. No food or water was provided.

Stalin made all that worse by refusing the advice of his generals to withdraw from threatened areas.

"German mistreatment of Soviet prisoners of war. During World War II, Nazi Germany engaged in a policy of deliberate maltreatment of Soviet prisoners of war (POWs), in contrast to their treatment of British and American POWs. This resulted in some 3.3 to 3.5 million deaths, or 57% of all Soviet POWs." -wiki

The Russians paid out in the same coin. Of the 300,000 Germans captured at Stalingrad, only 5,000 ever returned home.

As an aside, many of the soldiers surrounded at Stalingrad had helped overrun northern France in 1940 and helped force France out of the war.

German POW's are marched away from Stalingrad, early 1943.

There is a book called "Ninety Days That Doomed the Axis."

The Germans lost the cream of their peace time trained army at Stalingrad. They lost another 250,000 Axis POW's (some Italians) in North Africa. In the Pacific, the Japanese evacuated the starving remnants of their Army from Guadalcanal. They left 25 priceless warships sunk in the waters around that island.

I think putins remarks about Obama and the democrats being a bunch of sore losers yesterday was hilarious. Obama is nothing more than a bitch. It's like Putin and Trump are sitting around a table laughing at Obama over an expensive scotch and trump says to putin, well recess is almost over for Obama and then we can actually work.

Putin is not a good man, he is bad for Russia.
Russia is no democracy, it much more like China. ( no free press, one party)
Putin is making Russia weaker economically, suppressing free speech, invading foreign countries - all to support Putin.

When Russia implodes, it could be real bad.

The only good thing he has done for Russia is strengthen its military, but at what cost? What gain?
No one will attack Russia because of nukes.
What have they gained from invading Georgia and Ukraine? Increased popularity for Putin and little else.

I was raised during the Cold war and had a burning hatred of Communists which survives to this day. I have largely transferred this hatred to the American left. I can't help but think all of this anti-russian talk is just bullshite. We're using them to resupply the ISS so there's a certain level of cooperation there. I'd believe Putin over Obama any day.

???

How many American troops died fighting the Russians? Even the casualties in the proxy wars weren't that high.

I've recognized the value of good relations with a non-commie Russia since before Trump was even in the picture. Since they were fighting the chechnyans.

Islam, specifically this fundie strain of it, is the scourge of the west. The methods we'll need to fight it may not be palatable to our western sensibilities but we need to harden up and get our hands dirty to stop it.
