At the time, Operation Cyclone was a good idea.
You'll excuse me, won't you, if I'm a little tired on my country being used to create chaos around the world.
ETA: And if that's not a big enough kick to the nuts, my country's military is then being used as fodder in pursuit of the very terrorists we continue to create/train/fund.

No, it isn't great. I'm not hard legging for terror. I'm just saying these people fought the Russians. It was a good plan and revenge by the US for Vietnam. It bit our government in the arse a decade later though..

Why did Russia invade in the first place?

fricking never. I spent almost $5K getting my car back in good order just from driving over there for two years. Have to take it back in to the dealership tomorrow to check out a leak in the AC. A fricking 7.5 year old car, mind you. But I love it.
I don't miss the 60 hr weeks (10% terror, 60% boredom, 30% bullshite) or the heat either. DC feels cool at 90 degrees.
I miss the Russian broads, though.
You are making me want to take a border run, Bahrain is the tits when you are stuck in Saudi

When it comes to foreign relations, I would separate China from the U.S. and Russia. The U.S. and Russia tells third world countries, "If don't do this, we'll bomb you", "If you don't do that we'll sanction you". China says, "If you do this we'll build a damn for you", "If you do that we'll build a bridge for you".
You drew your line in the wrong place. Russia is as wrong as a dog with no dick. But China will prove to be the more menacing power. You seem to care for the disaffected and downtrodden. What China plans to do in Africa over the next 50 years will make the Belgians, French, and Afrikaners blush. I didn't even bring in our British cousins. They gave it the old Oxford try in some places.

No argument here, brah. I've never been happier than I was in Germany, but I did as I pleased in Bahrain (in my non/TDY, non-working sober hours). Money isn't much of an issue when you're single, have limited travel, and are clearing $9200 a month tax free in a place with few options for fun.

What is the estimated number of scumbags in ISIS? Anyone know?
I've seen estimates of around 10,000.

Did you know that Colin Powell said the same exact thing about Germany in his autobiography?
I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'm judging China based on what they've actually done, not based on what someone thinks they might do.

Well I had been in Stuttgart for a year or so when I was gifted the book. Army experience during the Cold War was probably quite different, but I guess he and I shared that fondness for the locals. I actually spoke with him on the phone once (in the spring of 1999). It was before his fame really peaked after he was appointed to State.

Yeah. Mum tried to warn me about the fräuleins in the months leading up to my PCS overseas. Didn't take. I was engaged barely 7 months after I got there. Didn't work out, though. All things considered (and over 5 years on), I've been at the losing end of that play.

My Dad was a young Army officer in Germany about the same time Powell was, but unfortunately for him, he was stuck changing my diapers and taking care of my mother while Powell was fraternizing with the locals.

Powell had a fairly young family at about the same time. Most officers aren't adulterers. Nasty rumors all around.

I have been told the number of full timers is significantly below that. They can and do recruit locals for short periods of time. I would guess the person who told me this knows exactly what he is talking about but who knows.

Actually, China has plenty of problems with muslim terrorists right now:

Muslims don't like Russia

I spent my share of time in each, but it got old fast. And Navy skanks were off-limits.

My first year i hit them all, the second year I maybe went out twice. The whole Island gets old pretty fast...except the money, but that's mostly gone now. As for the Navy skanks, i knew plenty of O's and chiefs who dabbled in junior enlisted activities. Hell the CO was caught on camera/facebook parting with enlisted.

Actually, Powell was in Germany three years before he even met his wife, and that's the period I'm talking about. I'm older than his oldest kid.
