Because it's a legal contract. Also I believe it was to protect women who were at the mercy of their husbands when women didn't work and were taking care of the kids by themselves.

Property rights, a widow or widower have the legal rights to the deceased property. Also, they have the burden of debt

Legal contract encompassing what?

Is there another legal device that could be used in its place?

It was started in the 10's and the 20's to keep whites and blacks from marrying each other. Then it just grew from there.

Because Dems wanted a way to keep whites and blacks from intermarrying.

That will always be the case as long as people continue to think it's any of their business.

There are a lot of really good reasons someone could cite as to why it's recognized.

It's just of my opinion that it isn't the role of government to do so.

Shouldn't even recognize unions... if I want to enter into a legal contract with someone for some reason then the courts can enforce that.

Should be no different than if a couple of people wanted to co-write a book together, or open a business together. In both those cases the contract they sign with each other has provisions for assets, for debts, for dissolution of partnership; it allows for joint tax fillings, checking, credit and investment accounts.

Why should a marriage be any different?

I usually hear this question from the religious crowd who think Jesus invented marriage.

1. Because heterosexual marriage creates new taxpayers (children)

2. Because heterosexual marriage helps to order society

These have been been the two main reasons given in the Western world since the reign of Augustus (they were given before, but became the standard at that point).

From a governing philosophy it stabilizes the state. Marriage setttles people, they stay in one place and sometimes start a family. This is good not only for society but for a nation. In order to incentivize it you get tax breaks etc.

You can see this philosophy in some companies as well, for example, they hire husband and wife couples bc those people are less likely to quit. Reduces turnover and helps make your business more stable.

I did not read all of the replies but two important reasons are our income taxation system and inheritance processes involve marital status.

So the state didn't have to foot the bill for every deadbeat Dad in town.... believe Lyndon Johnson screwed that concept up with the welfare.
