Poor black culture and the city geography of a ton of pockets of bad areas vs giant bad neighborhoods are the two biggest reasons.

Some day you should go talk to some of those dead- eyed sociopaths and ask them if they kill with glee because they lack health insurance and report back to us from your hospital bed.

used the cities in your OP and did some research... wow... it follows the trend exactly. The blacker the city the higher the murder rate.

If this is accurate, wow.

Interesting to note, if poverty = violence, why are majority Hispanic cities like San Antonio and El Paso, and poor white areas like Appalachia much less violent then their majority black counterparts?

Because spanish/white culcha doesnt dictate:

1) frickin hoes
2) Slanging dope
3) Get DA grip
4) 2 Phones
5) Territory holding
6) Being illiterate due to priority of schooling.

Now like every race, there are outliers and it sucks because these people are good people who get dumped into the trash bucket due to pigmentation of their skin.

That's the exact question posed by the article.

"Mitch spent $40M of federal funds on cameras and effectively gave up on preventing crime and invested in solving it"

I think you're right with regard to the current increase. At a minimum, the two are closely related in time. Probably hard to show causation, but many New Orleanians believe this and it sure seems true.

"also, the lack of segregation in Nola between economically different areas creates more crime. violent crime occurs in areas where polar classes meet"

At least with respect to murder, this almost can't be correct. If the "checkerboard" nature of New Orleans were to blame, you would expect to see more murders of white and upper class citizens but such people represent a tiny sliver of murder victims.

"I've argued that the culture that thinks murder is a good way to solve many problems is much more responsible for the economic situation than vice versa."

When this viewpoint becomes more accepted, we have a chance.

"Because you can't get your gunshot victims to a level one trauma center fast enough."

this is the least accurate (though at least less racist than some) post on this topic. New Orleans has one of the best level one trauma centers in the country and this actually keeps the murder rate down.

57,411 for New Orleans and 412,162 for Atlanta - and having similar poverty rates - 27.7 percent and 25.2 percent, respectively - there were 164 homicides in New Orleans last year compared to 95 in Atlanta.

Atlanta is a metro population of 5 million. How many murders are happening right outside the city limits in college park or right outside of zone 6?

My father used to say that one of the main things that caused the inordinate violence aside from the poverty was the isolation factor of New Orleans. New Orleans until recent times was essentially an island and it was hard to physically get out of the city and that if you looked into the murders and who were doing them and the locations , it was probably connected to old feuds that had grown over the generations.

Today, yes getting in and out of New Orleans is easy ...interstates , rail lines, bridges but for generations, the best way to get here was by boat and the two rail lines. So when you got here you stayed here and if you had a beef with someone, it was not easy to move away. If you can't get out, then you might as well be like the rest of the inmates.

Heat, humidity, alcohol, and statues of old white guys is a recipe for disaster.

One thing that could be skewing the numbers is not factoring in the economic positions within the black community between each city. ATL has a much bigger "black wealth" population than New Orleans. It may not be significant enough to be a factor though.
