Why do Americans support Israel so much?

First of all I don't care that Israel is building new settlements and don't care the UN condemned it. To me neither affect America at all. My question is why do Americans support Israel so much? People all over this board are so mad at Obama for not vetoing the bill at the UN but in the end who cares. Israel isn't a huge trade partner. Our support for Israel has cost America billions of dollars and cost American lives. Why should we support them? Why is Israel worth 1 American soldier?

You simply cannot dismiss the religious aspect of the equation. For many Americans, who fail to pay much attention to world politics, the Jewish state is a necessary and essential element to their worldview.

That is great that they are a country of freedom in the Middle East. How does that justify the US giving them money? So if you are a free country you get money. Iceland is a beacon of peace in the middle of the Atlantic let's give them money.

Israel was formed in the wake of the horrendous exposure of Germany's final solution. Many thousands of Jews were turned away from American shores and sent back to certain death in Europe. Creating a haven for the jews seemed worthy then and it is worthy.
The problem is that now is Israel is the problem. They are okay, not as bad as the Nazis but they are still pretty bad. Their Drang Nach Osten (Urge to the East) is an urge to take over the West Bank of the Jordan River. They are relentlessly seizing that land from its inhabitants with no possible end game except genocide.
As long as Israel is the leading force in ensuring there will never be peace, the US should not support them.

Because they give money to our politicians. They control the federal reserve so they have access to infinite money.
That's the problem with so much democracy. Everyone can vote including a lot of people that don't know what is really going on in life. That is why the founders put such limits on voting.

I'm trying to say that without sounding like a conspiracy theorist but whatevs. Our blind subservience to Israel is irrational.
Did I mention that I'm a Jew? Also an American. I've never stepped foot in Israel. I hear it's an amazing place, and the Jewish religion is way better than than the cancer that is Islam, but let them deal with their own problems.

Personally I would love to visit Israel as well. I hope the country flourishes but I have never heard a rational argument where America supporting Israel is beneficial to America.

Most Christians believe that if we are good to Israel, God will be good to us. It says that in the Bible.
Most secular people recoiled at the attempted extermination of the Jews in the 40's.
Just like we looked for a way into WWll because our heritage is British, many people see Israel as our spiritual heritage.

"The resolution, which was approved by a vote of 14 to 0, declares that Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem have "no legal validity" and constitute a "flagrant violation under international law".
It also calls the settlements a major obstacle to achieving a two-state solution and peace with the Palestinians. The US abstained instead of using its veto, breaking with a long-standing policy of blocking resolutions dealing with Israel.
Right-wing voices in Netanyahu's coalition have called on him to ramp up Israeli construction in the settlements, and some have even said it is time for Israel to annex parts of the West Bank.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Jerusalem Municipality said: "The Jerusalem Municipality has not changed its stance that building in Jerusalem is necessary for the development of the city and will continue to develop the capital according to zoning and building codes without prejudice, for the benefit of all residents."
Israeli human rights organisation B'Tselem estimates that, combined, about 600,000 Israelis live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The figures are based on official data provided by Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics and the Jerusalem Institute for Israel Studies. Palestinians say the figure is higher.
Sophie Lagoutte, a spokeswoman for the French Embassy in Tel Aviv, said the Paris initiative was not aimed at creating a new UN resolution but was intended to "reaffirm the importance of a two-state solution, with Palestinians and Israelis living side by side in security".
The French hope the decisions made at the meeting will help reignite the peace process, Lagoutte said.
Palestinian officials praised the UN resolution and the French initiative.
The Israelis have repeatedly stated that they will not go to Paris, and Netanyahu said on Friday that Israel would not abide by the resolution.
"Such steps are counterproductive to the situation," Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely told The Washington Post. "People are in love with an easy formula and ignore the complexity on the ground."
Israel does not intend to be part of the Paris conference, she said, or of "any international idea to force a final resolution on Israel" without it first sitting down and negotiating a peace deal with the Palestinians."
