Why did Obama cut a bitch boy deal with the #1 sponsor of terrorism?

I can figure out Obama's motivation for everything but this deal. He sent them crates of cash and they have openly laughed at him ever since the deal was inked.
It is one of the more inexplicable things I've ever seen re foreign policy or in general.

Primary objective of the deal was to stymie their nuclear program.

What's is there to figure out? Obama thought he was the smartest person in the faculty lounge and took an academic approach to a real world problem.
