The only real historical context they had to me (or I guess that mattered to me) was as public monuments of the late 19th/early 20th century era.

Well I understand your personal connection to the monuments as a resident...but they represented a whole lot more than that. The fact is in much of the South you still see Confederate symbols on government buildings.
Not to mention that we both know most of the folks in Jefferson, etc that hang confederate flags on their homes or bumper stickers on their trucks are making a very particular statement.

I mean, say what you will about some of his opinions, but the guy seems pretty damn well versed on civil war history, doesn't he?

I trace that back 20 years when I innocently pointed out that the Preamble to the Constitution clearly states that one purpose of the Constitution is to form a more perfect Union.

No way! Came back from the sorry arse neo-rebs. Anybody can see that the states are completely free to act any way they want!

So I have been interested in this for a long time.

They didn't just move to safer NOLA neighborhoods. They moved as far away as they could while still being able to commute to work. Those folks did more to harm New Orleans than any of this statue bullshite ever will. Suburban workers that commute into the city are moving capital and OUT of the city. We certainly don't give a shite about their opinion on matters of how we run NOLA.

Maybe if there were more Orleanians that chose to work, your whine would mean something, but, alas...

Ehhh, I'm not buying it. Two years ago, there was not any sort of significant number of residents that gave two shits about these things at all. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise. It's a contrived issue, pure and simple.

You might have a good point if they left because of racism, but they left because they didn't want to get shot and they wanted better schools than they were getting in N. O.

you can't separate racism from why they left. it's just too convenient that NOLA families moved outside of the parish to where they would have political power and people that looked like them

It always bugged me and I am glad they are finally getting rid of them.

forgot to add, now you have a generation or two of white people who have never really lived in NOLA. they were raised in Jefferson, or St. Tammany, and only know NOLA as where they go to eat on Saturday night and go to the Saints game on Sunday...

I kinda don't care one way or the other. I don't understand the hysteria around their existence nor do I understand the hysteria around their removal.
