I've lived in the South my entire life and have yet to actually meet someone in the KKK. As soon as I do, I'll ask them.

Everyone in the South has come across someone in the KKK. They just weren't wearing their costume at the time.

I saw an old documentary about them in school back in the 70's (when schools still taught kids about history) and the film stated the white hood and mask, as well as the robe, was to representing the purity of the white race.
so it wasn't about hiding, although im sure as the KKK was gradually seen as a less respectable organization to be associated with, it did turn into a convenient way of hiding you are a member.
