I see where a bunch of politicians are already jockeying for the job, none so far who impress me.

All of them I've heard so far were part of the Jindal crowd who allowed us to be in the shape we're in now.

The rhetoric about "we have a spending problem, not a revenue problem" is no doubt true to a degree, but what can the state treasurer do about it?

He passes no law, can only carry out what the law says he can, so why does that need to be the slogan?

Y'all tell me who I should vote for?

I support John Schroder who is the legislator that best shares my beliefs about state government. He may very well be the most fiscally conservative member of the House.

BigJim should comment on this.

quote:

State Rep. John Schroder, R-Covington, on Monday (Jan. 9) became the first elected official to enter the 2017 Louisiana treasurer's race. Eleven people have indicated they are looking at running for the office, including several legislators, but Schroder is one of the few who already has started to raise money for the campaign.

A legislator since 2008, Schroder sits on the House Appropriations Committee, which puts together the state budget and helps oversee state fiscal matters. He was one of the earliest and most outspoken Republican critics of GOP Gov. Bobby Jindal's financial strategies and budgeting tactics in years past.

He helped found the House fiscal hawks group, conservative lawmakers who partnered with Democrats to push back on Jindal's budgets. Last year, he was considered for House Appropriations chairman, a job that ultimately went to Rep. Cameron Henry, R-Jefferson.

Schroder is a homebuilder and owns his own business. He also is a veteran of the U.S. Army

He called BS on Jindal's schemes to balance the budget on several occasions.

I. B., I have given you a hard time before but if Schroeder is your guy AND since he fought Piyush, I'm in.

Yep. I like John. Haven't always agreed with him in the Legislature, but he was one of the first to start publicly calling out the Jindal Administration on their BS.

Rep. Schroder is alright and would make an OK treasurer I guess. Have to see who he is really running against.

Two general statements:

quote:

He helped found the House fiscal hawks group, conservative lawmakers who partnered with Democrats to push back on Jindal's budgets.

The fiscal hawks were long on bitching, short on answers. The only time they got anything done is when they teamed up with Jon Bel Edwards and the House Democrats to pass a THREE YEAR amnesty to fund the stuff they wanted (no cuts, just more spending). And then they have the temerity to complain about Jindal's gimmicks?

Also, while Kennedy did a lot of commentary outside of the scope of the treasurer's office, he ran the office well. It's an important office dealing with financing and cash flow of the state. Kennedy could engage in "extra curricular" hobbies because he did a good job of doing his constitutional duties. We can't get so caught up in the "extra" part without doing an evaluation of the ability to do the actual job of being treasurer.

And again, I would like to see who else is running.

Some rumored candidates include Rep. Julie Stokes, Sen. Riser, former Commissioner of Administration Angele Davis, Rob Maness, Sen. LaFleur and former speaker Chuck Kleckly.

I would not be upset if Schroder won, but I would be worried he would emulate Kennedy budget criticism part without really knowing how to handle the actual job duties.

I bet you'll be a Davis supporter for the race.

In the general? Yeah either her or Julie Stokes.

I likes the ladies...

But seriously they are work horses where as he is a show horse.

Only people I would probably not want to see are LaFleur (but good chance he doesn't even run), Maness and Kleckley.

LaFleur- Good guy, but we don't need to give the democrats another statewide office.

Maness- will run for matching funds. No business being treasurer.

Kleckley- Nice guy, empty suit.

Schroeder, Davis and Stokes are all people I could vote for. LaFleur, Maness and Kleckley are people I would vote against.
